    73S Targa 9113310098 - starting the reassemly

    Following up on this thread:

    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ighlight=annie

I've started the reassembly! A few days ago, I started working on the rear bumpers and I'm beginning to understand why it's so expensive to have a car restored. Fitting the new trim and deco pieces is extremely fiddly and time consuming. However, the end result is really satisfying!

Here are a few shots of the process and end result:

Very nice work. I doing about the same stuff on mine, and I was thinking the same thing about how long it takes to do a simple task!

Chuck - For some reason I thought parts were bolt on with a little fitting - boy was I wrong. The rub strips and aluminum backers were not only too long, but cut at the wrong angle to snug to the reflector. And, the backer was not even close to the profile of the bumper. The end caps are really bad. I got them as close as possible but wish they were better. It all came out well, but I was holding my breath hoping to not scratch new paint or do a bad cut on the trims.

I have never understood why a company will go to all the trouble of creating a part and then do it wrong. It's not just one company either. Porsche can't even get the dash pad correct. Actually a correct part if becoming a rarity anymore.

Welcome to my (our) world and what Richard said in spades. Its all in the details, and having the customer involved in the process yields a big nod of the head when they spend just one day of this work. Be it a panel replacement or some trim, what looks like an hour turns to 3 or 4 just to get it right. Good enough is not.

Just wait til you get to the part of putting those on the car and getting them to fit well with the rubber insert. Tip, have a helper. I did mine by myself, on and off no less than ten times before satisfactory. At least I am fast at doing it now.

Annie's hood coming together. Note the faded anodizing on the grill and emblems. After looking at them for a while, I think I'll keep her honest and leave the faded parts for now.
