    1968 911S flares or not?

    Hi guys,
I was wondering if 1968 S's have any flares on the rear wheel arches. I saw a project car the other day that had them. I am convinced that they should not be there. The car has 5.5x15 fuchs.
    Thanks in advance.
    Carl

Please see attached photo of a resprayed, refreshed but otherwise original '68 S, so you can compare to what you are confronted with and judge for yourself.

Yes, no flairs was stock... but if the car you're looking at has real 911R flairs, added in-period, I wouldn't cut them off just yet

It would be interesting to get Harvey to chime in on what he has seen re: 68 models with flares - not TR or R.

This 68 911S I'm seeing has flares, but after the all the posts I assume that it must be something added later.
The info I got from Porsche says:
    -Year: model'68
    -Version: 911S Coupe
    -Engine type: 2000S 901/02
    -Gearbox: Nș 428157 901/02
-Exterior colour, name and code: 6609=black
    -Interior colour: leatherette black
-M Extras: additional heating Webasto, sliding roof, colored windows, rearwiper,Radio Blaupunkt Frankfurt with speaker and antenna, outside mirror,outsidethermometer,3-point safety belts

Next step will be to look for welds? I would like to confirm if in fact has flares added back in 67/8 or much later. I attach a detailed pic.
    Thanks to all of you.

I have seen at least three 68 cars with 69 flairs besides Bob's.
The first one was when I was attempting to show a new service writer how to identify the different years of 911s.
The new guy soon had me look at a 68 with flairs on all 4 fenders and I ASSUMED they were added in an attempt to modernize the car. (this was in 72 BTW)
I didn't inspect or look at the car closely.... I do remember it looked very nice but I couldn't say if it was not a repaint...I forgot about the car until decades later when I saw a 68 with 69 flairs on the rear only..this one I looked at more closely and it looked quite good but definitely a repaint. Still couldn't find any obvious welds.
The third was at a body shop where they had installed the 69 flairs (again in the 70s)and the job looked incredible. Definitely added to"upgrade" the car.
...But it got me to thinking and in one of my conversations with Jim B. the odd car came up. He had also seen a 68 with unusual fenders and was pretty sure it wasn't modified. Maybe Jim will tell the tale better.....
The conclusion is...there really isn't one because I didn't see the need to really investigate the anomaly. So I'm not of much help with a honest conclusion.
...Before I cut them off today, I would certainly strip to see it there is evidence of welding just for grins....
