I am puzzled: 1969 911E - How many temperature switches?

A friend of mine works on his 911E motor. He found 2 temperature switches on his breather cover on top of the case. Any catalog we looked up show just one temp. switch, but he found 2 there, both wired:

One is Porsche part 911 617 117 00, the second is VDO part, but apart from the different temp. range on their respective bodies they look same. One of them is dead now.
On top of it, wiring diagram shows 2 temp switches (start, start assist).
Any other early 911 motor I looked at has just one switch sitting on this cover, so is this some '69 oddity, or someone drilled and threaded second hole for a new switch when the old one gave up? If so, where should I look for temperature switch (start) and temperature switch (start assist)?

    Thanks a lot,

It's a '69 thing. One year only related to the cold start system. Hold on and I'll get you the other part number.

    911 617 113 00 is the second switch.

I always substitute a single late model thermo-time-switch (+45*) and use it to activate the cold start solenoid (the upper one on the MFI pump). The original ones at +10*and -10* are too cold and won't operate at normal temperatures. I believe the spray tubes in the air filter housing are a fire danger and should be avoided if you can. I install the new switch to operate the cold start solenoid and dummy the other. Gled

I source the 45* switch from CIS 911’s that we’re located in the drivers side chain cover, from 74->. Same function, cold start thermo-time switch.
