    Early 911 "S" prototype engine

I'm posting this for a friend. He has an early 911 "short block" that has been sitting under a workbench for
a lot of years . I had him take pictures of the engine #, the build number, the cast date and the case paring numbers.

It was a number sequence I had never seen before. I asked some knowledgeable people about it and they said it was
    an early "S" Prototype engine.
I was told the engine number before this number and the one after it are accounted for.
This number fills in the gap between those 2.

This engine is missing it's heads, cams and cam housings, but I do believe he has a
set of solex carbs for it.

I'm trying to establish some sort of value to place on this engine before attempting to sell it. I'll probably post it on
Pelican also, but I figured since this is an early S engine, the Early S Registry would be the best place to start.

Anyone having any additional info on this sort of engine , please feel free to comment.
I'll enclose a few pictures of numbers..

    Engine is located in Massachusetts.

WOW, there's a mystery for Dave
    Registry #1777

When you look at Dave's thread

    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...Engine-Build-s

You would have expect that #53 would have been engine #900153.

That and the fact that it's casted 6-66 are making it a mystery.

Yes, I am well aware of the three engines. They are in the prototype series, but in my opinion they were not development engines for the 1967 911S; basing this on the casting dates being far too late for 1967 development. They may instead be development engines for the 1968 911S or something else. If any of these engines were complete and original, then we might learn something from them.

    gandalf,

way cool engine, 900 053. The first 1 thru 100 sequence of engine numbers were held aside for development and research engines. It has not been established if they were all cast at the same time, or in batches, or on a "as needed" basis. Your engines casting date 66 is confirming the engines were cast as needed. The engine #32 was one of the 901/02 prototypes - months earlier casting.

With a casting date of June 1966 Carbs for your engine would have been Webers. Porsche honored the Solex contract for 911 supplier from September 1964 into February 1966, Webers thereafter. The Webers more than likely had the "S" stamped into the bodies.

Timing on your engine being cast in June, built in June/July, "probably" tests from that date forward. With the new 160hp there were a number of tests that had to be completed just prior and during the roll out of this upgraded specification. Did you get any paperwork with it? Any "V" stamping on anything?

    Bob:
I don't have any paperwork that lists particulars about the engine. I did see a set of early webers nearby when I looked at it. I didn't pay attention to them because I was thinking it would have solexes.
I don't know anything about "V" stampings.. Could you elaborate so I will know where to look and what to look for ?? And where would the S on the webers be ?

    Thanks for the info..
