    S/T, RSR Tire Selection...

    I recently purchased a 1971 911S/T and it arrived with (front) Michelin TB5F 18/60 R15 (225/50 R 15) & (rear) Michelin TB5R 23/62 R15 (270/45 R 15)

    I was looking for tread all of the way across the tire for the street and ordered a set of (front) Michelin TB15 18/60-15 & (rear) Michelin TB15 23/62-15 rains but the sidewall is extremely thin which makes the tire feel somewhat unstable.

    Is there a recommendation for a ST/RSR tire from anyone? Does anyone have experience with the Avon (CR6ZZ) and what sizes would fit? Is there another brand/size that is recommended?

    I can vouch the car is stunning. I saw the car at a local cars and coffee. Really nice build.

    On my tangerine 73 I run Toyo RA-1's on my 7/8 15in rims. Excellent grippy R comp tire. People run them full tread for wet and shaved for max dry grip. Have been through torrential rain with good traction. I have 225's on my rear 8 in rims. Not sure if they make these to fit your extra wide RSR rears. You can look them up on tire rack. If you can't find suitable options for 15in rims you can always go up to 16in rims for running on the track but that would be a shame as the car looks so perfect on the current setup. Happy hunting.

    I'm running the TBs and loving them (apart from price). You'll get used to the softer side walls and there is an added advantage of comfortable ride

    I understand the Avons are another good choice, there is a lovely S/T rep built by Alan Canford running the Avons and it certainly looks the goods... (search Alan.uk)

    Thank you Jack,

    I looked at the Pirelli P7 Corsa but because the limited tread & width of the tire and the heavy rain we experience in South Florida I believe the Pirelli P7 Corsa will be equal to the Michelin TB5's I removed and replaced with TB15's.

    The sidewall of the TB5 is substantially firmer/thicker than the TB15 so I may just have Roger Krause hand groove the outside slick section for better all around use if I can't find anything else.

    I have myself a 2.8 RSR tribute with 9&11 x 15 Fuchs wheels. I have TB5 and TB15 sets and both are great. The rubber on new TB15 are softer than before and now, TB15 is a real rain tire! Maybe too soft on dry roads if you drive hard… I heard bad comments on Avon tires. Guys who drove for the famous Tour de France (classic race) were obliged to use Avon tires because of sponsorship contracts! That's maybe why they didn't like them?

    More details on the car and pics. Now in regards to TB, i think you have the best tyre you can place on this car. I recently bought a set for my ex ST, and besides price, no complaints.

    Michelin is almost the best out there, with these sizes.

    HI Jack,
    I can see on the top tire in your photo of the Michelin TB15 stack that the sidewall is sagging the same as my set. I am also running 9" & 11" x 15 Fuchs & Minilites.

    The sidewall of the TB15 is much thinner than the TB5 (I'm assuming this is better for rain?) but when you change from TB5's to TB15's the steering wheel reaction time is immense, the TB5's are precise where the TB15's there is so much lag-time from turning the wheel and the sidewall moving and then the tire grabbing. I'm guessing this is good for in the rain because I can't think of any other reason to run such a thin sidewall. What pressures are you running in the TB15's? I'm running ~2.2 bar (32 psi) but I was thinking of maybe trying a higher pressure of ~2.5 bar.

    Hello Mark,
    I had the same feeling first time I switched from the TB5 to the TB15 (new version 2013). The old version of TB15 I drove 3 years ago was different and more polyvalent. Harder as well.
    For the TB5, my porsche classic specialist told me to put 2 bars on all 4 wheels and to keep this pressure on the track as close as possible. But for the TB15, I have no clue in fact! I just put my TB15 set when the forecasts are bad and rain is expected. I didn't drive Trudi with TB15 on the dry for a long time. Or very cautiously! I think I have 2.2 bars on the 4 wheels.
