Special early 1964 features on 1965 cars

Was taking the gauges off my car for restoration and noticed that all the gauges are stamped 3.65 except for one which is 10.64

If this isn't provided elsewhere, I have the change from aluminum to steel spoked steering wheels during the month of September 1965 using original cars. Since it is an assembly piece, chassis numbers are not so relevant (and I haven't asked permission to reveal). Invoice dates are:

9/8/65: aluminum
9/30/65: steel

I have no cars on either side of those dates that are exceptions.

Are all armrests black (regardless of upholstery color) until around August 1965 and after that only match the rest of the upholstery -- through 1968?

Interiors that aren't all black are pretty rare. I can confirm the endpoints of this armrest color assertion but I have nothing on the changeover.

Back in 2003 I caught this slate grey '68 912 Targa at Lake Arrowhead:

I think it's in the Netherlands now.

1964-1965

Here are two early brochures that at least confirm what's generally accepted.

Both of these are Porsche of America brochures and hence undated but these are clearly early cars. Note that the car in Type 911 - 2000 has six-pleat seats.

I have photos of four cars with known chassis numbers the latest of which is July 31, 1965 with black armrests on tan, blue and red door panels. You have added gray on a car with a tall grille. I also have this one which is a 1966 with non-perforated seat back (trust me), round shift knob, steel spoked wheel, large ignition switch bezel -- but no chassis number. So after September...

my observation for 64 and 65 cars is that fabric seats did not have perforated seat backs..

I have no evidence of perforated seat backs being used after August 1965. I have no images of 1965 cars with cloth inserts for reference -- thanks for the info!

me neighter(evidence) , but pepita non perforated pic plastic strap on releas lever identifies this seat as early(6 pleat)

I could be wrong but I thought the end of perforated seat backs coincided with the change from perforated vinyl to basketweave vinyl inserts. The common 911-912 color chart printed 5.65 refers to "basket weave grained leatherette." The color chart could well have preceded the changeover.

Earlier color charts [see haul's post in Standard and Special Colors for late 64 until May 65 901/911 ?] didn't specify perforated or basketweave.

I have photos of a 7/31/65 car with perforated vinyl on file. None after this. Also have an early September basket weave car. Nothing in between.
