Hi all, I am back! It has taken some time for me to finish my house, but seems under control now....

Danger, I am pretty sure your car left the factory in April 1965, like most cars with VIN 300717-301035.

I expect the engine covers were changed when the 1965 engine case was introduced (inc date stamps). Although both are numbered 901/01, the 1964 engine case is slightly different to the 1965 version. Obviously the 1964 case misses the cast numbers, but also some other details are different. As of Nov 1964 we find the 'improved' cases (with date stamp) and could be that as of then we also find the stronger valve covers (anybody any record of that??).

Superelfje: My records indicate that 1965 cars 300359 and 300492 have engines with the thin valve covers. It is unlikely that cars that left the factory after the first week of Feb 1965 have these, however, given the fuzzy logic in the factory back then, there will be exceptions. Car 300700 was found to have a left over 1964 engine case with 1965 valve covers.

Hope this helps, I know it doesn't, but we keep on trying ;-)

I thought your car had a short vent drain tube, but I see a long one here, will change that in our community records. It looks like this feature changed between 700 and 705 end March

And 301022 has engine number 900326 as per Kardex - obviously they had a few problem engines that were set aside for rectification.

What is the consensus on the tangs/hooks. My April 65 car doesn't seem to have ever had them?

301382 also has them. What other method is there for securing the rear of the trunk carpet?
