    73 S clutch cover question...

I purchased the 'clutch repair kit' from PORSCHE that PET illustrated as being correct for my 73S but it included a cast iron cover. The one that was in the car was aluminum, and several sources tell me the aluminum one is the correct one for the S. Can anyone tell me if the aluminum cover was indeed factory/stock for the car, or is it an upgrade that had been added in the past. Lastly, if anyone knows of the correct part number for a 'repair kit' that includes the aluminum I would appreciate it....PET does not seem to identify it. Thank you.

Porsche has superseded the ALU clutch to iron. You can buy a ALU clutch kit from Sachs (sport kit) in the aftermarket. I think Patrick Motorsport sells a kit also. Gled

Gled - thank your for your informative reply. For a car that is being restored to entirely stock and just driven on the street, is the iron cover entirely satisfactory or is aluminum cover that much better. Given the cost of the resto, I do NOT want to take any short cuts...happy to spend money where it makes sense. Your or other's thoughts please.

The iron certainly hurts MOI but other than that, no real difference.
190hp engines need all the help they can get to spin up.

I asked the same question and a fellow member graciously posted a link for me, so here ya go! I weighed them both and if I remember right the alloy unit was 3# lighter.

From what I have read in other threads, the aluminum is good for the track, but street drivability is much better with the iron unit.

Thank you for your note, but of course as luck would have it (believing that the aluminum was a must), I went ahead yesterday and purchased the aluminum set up from PELICAN. I will ONLY be driving this on the street. Now I don't know what to do

THIS is exactly the problem with online opinion. The listener has to parse fact from fiction.
Stock alum pressure plate is perfectly fine for the street (Hey, maybe that's why Porsche chose this unit for the original application?)

You want to see a "track" setup?

First hand experience. The aluminum clutch is more of an on / off switch with little in between. This makes it take a bit more skill then the iron clutch which is more of a dimmer switch and easier to modulate in traffic.

    Hopefully this makes sense.
