Thread: Too expensive now? Really fun cars?

Too expensive now? Really fun cars?

Many complain about the soaring costs and unaffordabikity of the early 911's (though this does save more of them)

I feel the same way that I can no longer afford a Ferrari GTO, etc. Thats just the way it is.

But - a provocative view - there are actually more fun and certainly more affordable cars out there. 911's don't have a monopoly on fun. If you really care about cars, that's what's to maximize.

Buy an early Mini Cooper, S or not. They also have a great race pedigree, are incredibly fun to drive - more so than a 911. And try to keep up with one - not going to happen in tight quarters. Indeed, watch the movie Rush and see what James Hunt and Lauda were driving back then!

Other great cars exist. In fact, I always picked my mother's first year Miata to drive over my Carrera cab in the town as it was more fun. More prestigious - no. More fun - absolutely without question.

I do understand that past aspiration and the firm of the car matter. I just happen to love the early mini coopers just as much.

That intriques me as it seems correct on the face of it.
But, expensive isn't then just relative to other cars, but to other life decisions and assets/toys/experiences, which brings it back to assets and affordability, in a world of constrained resources?

    Just a philosophical thought.

Even a newer style '06 MINI Cooper S, last of the supercharged with proper mods. Super engaging to drive, fun quotent is off the charts.

    FUN is also relative .....

and perhaps in the eyes ( seat time ) of the beholder

( in some ways OTHER Porsches are also, but all different in their order or degree of FUN )

can you tell I am a brand loyalist ?

I would agree. My GTV provides at least 75% of the driving enjoyment of my 330 GTC for a fiftieth of the cost.
Another undervalued sportscar IMO, is a nice 308 GTB. Gorgeous, well built, great sounds, good handling and bargain pricing.

Another vote for the Alfa's. I have had several and currently own a 71 Giulia Super. Great sound, great handling, exotic all alloy twin cam motor with Webers, race pedigree.

Here's my Super and my former GT Junior.
