    VIN# 1965 911 - Is this right?

Hey guys, I have been a reader of the forum off and on for some time. Great forum!

I have the chance to buy a euro 1965 911 matching numbers on chassis, engine (inclusive solex carb.) and transmission. According to seller it has the correct numbers in the correct place and the number is low (VIN: 3007xx). I'll post it's VIN# if I buy the car.

Went to see the car today and something caught my eye. Usually the stamped VIN-tag would not be in a flat metal piece. Furthermore look at the texture of the smuggler compartment and the surroundings and the sheet metal where the VIN is placed - not the same. Does this look right to you?

Also - I was under the impression that the alloy VIN-tag should be placed next to the stamped VIN on the chassis? It is placed like this:

Any help would be greatly appriciated. Feel free to pm me your thoughts if you would rather not post...

    Thanks

Ed, perhaps, in the light of some of the comments on recent threads, VIN resurrection would be an appropriate term?

Check the stamped number inside the car, under the knee pad...

Hi John912 - that was also my intension but did not have my tools with me. I'm now waiting for seller to send me a picture of this. I'll keep you posted. If the production# shown under the knee pad match the 3007xx would this be worth dealing with when its got the VIN tampering in the front?

A good welder could work magic in creating fraud, but doing so to knee pad area is more difficult but not impossible. Why not go further to see if doors, fenders, and lids also have 3-digit stampings with understanding that they could have been legitimately replaced over time. Gather as much evidence as possible. How about the other clues that only the very early cars have like button dash, flat rear cross member under deck lid, etc,

It has been trimmed for weight due to it has been used for historic races eight years ago. Seller has documentation on this and it's got cage fittings welded in the buttom of the car. Both doors, bumpers, wheels, part of dash and front seats has been replaced/removed.
