Tonight at Gooding: Factory Prepared '68L

As a few of you may already know, tonight at Gooding's auction in Amelia Island Rennman's (Don Ahearn) 1968 Factory prepared 911L crosses the block. Purchased and raced since new this car epitomizes the current trend of 'fashionable patina'. If you're tired of reading about barn find, garage find, and backyard find Ferraris bringing more money than perfectly restored examples, you should tune into the auction live online and see what one of our own beloved Porsches can do.

Say what you want about the current state of the vintage 911 market, but these auctions are what set the trend for the rest of us. I for one intend to pour a favorite libation and kick back to see how frothy investor sentiment can get.

If any indication by the sale of the 2,7 RS this morning which opened at 1 M, I think Mr Ahearn has a good chance of picking up some spare beer money......

I also wish you well Don

    Hey Mike,

I'm not finding any live streaming from the Gooding auction, how are you following this?

That is such a great car, I know Don is going to do well with it.

    Best,

Man, I just don't get it. The '73 plane Jane S went for $220K, the RS Lightweight for $1.4mm (with premium), a '69E for $125K... and this car can't get above $260???
    What are people thinking?

Bill of sale only?! Unable to export for european buyers. That may have dampened the fun a bit.

Either that or all the buyers had loaded up on 907's, RSK's, maybe a Dino or Daytona and felt that the bundles of Benjamins may need to get packed back in the sack for the next auction.

Admittedly for some of these boys, there is an unlimited supply of bullion dripping off the money tree at home, but even so, they do step back and take a look from time to time , just to gather new momentum before swinging the big axe again.

I am thinking also, the cars that brought the big money were VERY well distinguished from the mediocre. Not that Don's car was mediocre, but maybe not eliciting the oooh's and ahhhh's some of this other stuff did.
    It IS still a Stellar 68 L .

You could almost sense some of the bidders were 'foaming' at the mouth when the 'Best' rolled across the stage......

the RS lightweight went for $1.4M and the '67 S SWT for $192k including the commission. The Targa had good paint but several things that were wrong, e.g., "a period correct engine rather than original, wrong door handles, hood badge, seats...
pretty, but not correct to maximize the price. The RS was spectacular.

I would have bet the "L" would have gone higher.
