Wink And why not a 912 Soft Window/coupe?

I believe this thread should belong to the General Info section but since it's a 912, I'm posting it here.

I think the interest is rising for these cars, as they deserve to be considered even if they are not "top of the food chain".

I've recently driven a soft top and own a coupe version, and really enjoyed them both.

Better balanced and lighter, they cannot compete with the "S" 911 models but I think a serious alternative to a "T" model (especially the 2,0 engine) and financially still reasonable compared to the rising prices of the 911.

Perhaps this is an old debate and I should be sharing my experiences with the 912 forums instead of here, but in the soft top version, you really don't need the additional power of the 6 cylinders, and I never felt I wasn't driving a proper Porsche....

Ever rode a girl's bicycle in public? Or accidently put on your wife's underpants?
    Very similar sensation.

I understand intellectually the 912 should be the "little brother" but unfortunately they are more like the weird cousin. The one who finds his other cousins attractive.

    oh my

    and on THAT perspective :

just how did we look down into the opening in the wall, get all up on our toes and wonder aloud, "hey, this is cool...... wonder if ~~" ?

-----and next we find we have traveled right down the chute and ended up in a laundry basket in the basement .....

Frank, I am never ceased to be amazed at how that cranial mass works of yours.

    Thanks for the laugh
    Best Regards,

Such different cars. I love them. Had my 67 911S and loved it. It is actually amazing how different they feel from a 912. The 912 always feels more nimble and mostly underpowered. Properly driven and with the same suspension (sway bars, wheels, tires and Koni's) the 912 will blow a 911 away on a twisty road if you never get to a straightaway!

So now we turned this discussion into a battle with the sexes? The 912 vs 911 Soft Window Targa rock'em sock'em? Next thing we know is that some 944er will chime in and carve another scar into this discussion. I've fortunately driven most all flavors of 944turbo/928/911/912. The 912 is a kind of stately ride, while the the 944 Turbo might be the pedal to the metal whiplash. The 928 is a forgiving Porsche on steroids while the 911 is in fact a balanced of hungered grind of race and performance.
In terms of Soft Window Targa... its a car for warm, dry weather. It might take you a couple of minutes to boot the targa top and zip back the softie, but once opened up its a completely different animal. The car becomes a 911 Spyder, as a convertible early car, giving the driver a top down experience of fresh air and big -big scenery. Whether its a 911 or 912, there will be an unexplained rush you get with all that openness.

My own car is a 69. The nice thing about a 69, is as a long body, at least for mine, I got the car with some changed out upgrades, so I am carefully going all out even more. My 3.2L with a fresh set of P&Cs is ferocious.. bulletproof and needy. The 901 gives me a dogleg 5 speed that I think retains the shift coolness while speaking of which, oil coolers do just that in both LA and Oakland traffic jams. No overheating for me sitting in traffic. Underskirts I have Boges in the front and KYB in the rear, which I think makes a perfect combination for straight, bumps, curves and freeways. There is two OEM Turbo Tie Rods and I own two sets of Fuchs in both 15 and 16s.
I saw that 67 911S on Goodings go for $200,000 and yeah.. well.. its original and all that. I think that person will be VERY happy with it. For some of the other softies out there and hard decisions need to be made on what to do with the car. I really, really feel if you can understand your upgrades in terms of variability, like as if you could get the nod from Mr. F. Porsche himself, your upgrades slide the car into another area.

    Hi Barwaut,

I went to Holland last week to see the car, really enjoyed driving it, purchased it, and sent you an email to put it on your 912 registry. So hopefully Swiss plates pretty soon
