    How many???

Greetings All, I have recently acquired a 1969 911S Soft Window Targa, and it seems to me it's pretty rare. Does anyone have an idea just how many of this configuration exist? The car was bought by my father in-law in 1969 and my wife and I bought from the estate. We also have a 1958 356A Speedster and a 2006 carrera 4S.

This is a common question for an uncommon car. No one knows but the factory and they ain't tellin'. There are some estimates on this site. There are confirmed softies up to '73.

    Thumbs up

    Mounger,

    Welcome to the board,

Congrats, you are the owner of two very rare cars indeed....

The '69S softy is quite unique ....

I've not ever heard any hard facts on the different numbers of hard and soft window Targas produced for a given year....
Also, some hard windows were later switched to soft…and the other way round….

The Targa experts will probably correct me, however, I believe Targas were soft window until '68 then hard window in '69 with the option of soft window through '70, then all hard window throughout.... with the very rare exception

    Cheers,

... and your early Porsche adventures have just begun...

Well, as as has already been mentioned.... there are probably very few soft window targa's particulary from mid 68 on. There was a technical section put into the workshop manual about converting a soft window to a hard window.....but not the other way. Only recently has it been popular to convert back to a soft window.

Congrats on joining our group. You've got a wonderful car...which one of the family was the one who made the purchase?? I'm very familiar with your last name..... , as I work in the garment industry in Seattle, and I collect a few cars myself. I've met Glenn a few times, and another member of your family Kurt Nielsen is a good acquaintance of mine.

Edit: Well, doing a quick bio search, you may in fact "be" Glenn.... good to have you on board! I'm in New York at Market week!...bring back "good" or "bad" memories?? ;-)

    regards,
    Eric

Duh; I didn't even put 2 and 2 together. When I saw his address in Esses last month, I shot him a mail as he lives only a few miles from my in-laws.

I had no idea the '69S is a softie targa! VERY COOL. We still haven't made it out to the island since we talked. Welcome to the board. If you need anything, let me know.

Welcome Mounger, I met you a few years ago at the Italian concours when they held it on the pier. I have been a avid attendee of the events you have led, and I hope (at some point) you might share how extensive your involvement in our hobby really is! Please let us see your car in the Show Your Ride thread.

My brother had a '69 soft-window S for a few years, and I recall him saying that only 6 or so came from the factory with that option during the model year. The current owner may have more information, I'll see if we can find out more.

    Again, welcome!

    How many??

Well, it was great to get so many answers to my question. What I guess from all this, is that no one knows how many 1969 911S Soft window models were built. Here are a few answers to the question left by you.
    1) I have a Porsche "Certificate of Authenticity" and it has the "folded soft rear window" listed as one of the many options, so it wasn't added later. 2) Yes I am the Glenn Mounger that was in the garment industry and also I was the Chairman of The Pebble Beach Concours (1999-2005) . 3) No the 58 Speedster is not for sell, it's a 1600 normal with rudge wheels and I've owned it for 20+ years. I've never participated in one of these chat lines so I not sure how it works. However, if I can figure it out I'll try and post a photo of the car when it gets out of the paint shop. Thank you all for your answers!

There's a 69 targa soft window on eBay right now. Cool yellow color.
Buy to me, soft window targas look very, very odd. Actually I find them very ugly as the goofy stainless roll bar and the missing rear window ruins the lines of the car. A hard window targa is a bit better but nothing beats the lines of a non sunroof coupe.
