Jamie, that is not correct. A law was passed with language supplied by SEMA which was intended to help with the registration of kit cars or cars built from the ground up. This language inadvertently killed the YOM registration. Fortunately this was noticed prior to going into effect and was rectified so YOM is still available.

Interesting. Last Fall I registered my 914 for street use. They would not let me register my 1975 plates even though the registration number was clear and I had them in my hand.

Maybe I will try again. The time period was before SEMA.

    Jamie,
Go to www.txdmv.gov and then pull up form VTR-54 Antique Vehicle.

On the top right you will see the box for the approved "old" plate No.
At the bottom of the form are listed the General Requirements, the first describes the "old" plate process.

As with all things bureaucratic who you talk to has much to do with your success.

I have a YOM on my '74 and antique plate on the '71 because I don't want to have a front plate. As long as you have both plates and they are in good condition they should be ok. But as Bob said you have to have a clerk who's done it before.

And you do have to put both plates on the car or risk the pesky plate ticket.

yes I know. I had 3 cars with Year plates on them. That's why it was a surprise they would not let me register it.

You can go through a bonded title procedure. The procedure is different for vehicles previously titled in TX or out of state. In either case you will get a bond based on the value of the vehicle and a verification of vin # from a state inspection station. The process is on www.txdmv.gov under Vehicle without a title.

Thanks and good info Bob. Any recommendation for classic car body shop and mechanic for engine overhaul here in Texas or in Houston?

Sorry Cody, I do not have any recommendations for the Houston area. Maybe someone from the area can make one.

I can't help with Houston, but you might consider bringing it to Jones Autowerks in San Antonio. Closer than DFW and is exceptional with the old engines.
