Anbody know anything about the vertical pipe extending out of the right hand lower valance (directly above Butzi's head)? Looked at this picture a million times and just noticed it. Early gas heater located in the engine bay? Overboard drain hose? Very interesting.

The whole picture is full of little surprises... the left rear tire seems to have been badly damaged, and I didn't see the mechanic under the car until I looked at the photo for several minutes. The car doesn't have an engine bonnet and the twin exit pipes on the exhaust appear to have a smaller than normal diameter.

-That drain pipe could be for oil overflow... just a guess.

these are prototype 911's. --yes the rear valance was one piece from corner to corner. Could the drain above Butzi's head be the water drain for the taillight lens box? We all have the little ones there now. Looks too big though. Could also be the exhaust for the Gasoline heater. Chris

Road draft tube crankcase breather???? This was an era before that stuff was vented back into the intake even though they had already started doing that on the 356 C models.

I'm curious to know if it had a 356C transmission in it the way those rear wheels are hanging down!

One had 356B rear axle and S90 engine (13321), Transmissions got several times exchanged and varied between 4 and 5 speed w different gear ratio including similar to 356SC's, one as early as 1964 with automatic transmission (13325), one as early as 1965 w 170hp S engine (13324). Also, some were 902 4cyl/356 engine prototypes.
    Exhaust configurations varied too

The T7 4seater (1959/1961) Type 754 had another rear configuration, engine air was from underneath numberplate and sideways.

    Curious Exhaust on Early 911

Here's another image of a 911 with a "Curious Exhaust", perhaps another picture of the same car.

Charlie, above car had different engine louvres…these are the very early "vertical style" engine grills, approx 1962/63.
