    . . . (SOLD) 1984 Porsche 911 SC/RS

    . . . Built as a Homologation “special” at the request of sponsor Rothmans for an FIA Gruppe “B” Rally Porsche, the SC/RS borrowed freely from the 911 RS/RSR construction concepts of a decade earlier. As a two wheel drive evolution of the discontinued 911 SC model, only twenty cars had to be built in order to satisfy the rules. These were numbered 001 to 0020, with most being pressed into immediate FIA Rally service by factory teams such as Rothmans (six cars) as well as for privateer use. These cars cost 190,000 DM or $72,000 US in 1984 . . .

    . . . The substitution of factory lightweight items produced a curb weight of just 2160 lbs, 1,000 pounds lighter than a street SC model. It did with a lightweight body shell, aluminum hood, rear deck, and door panels. Additional weight savings were achieved with thin glass, 935 racing seats, and Kevlar bumpers . . .

    . . . The SC/RS utilized performance parts from other models. The 917 model donated brakes and the earlier RSR/953 provided suspension components, fabricated exhaust headers, clutch, gears, mechanical fuel injection, dry sump, front sway bar, and limited slip differential . . .

    . . . With a 290hp engine, the SC/RS was the fastest “production” Porsche street car ever. The German magazine AutoMotor and Sport recorded a 0-60 time of 4.9 seconds for a street SC/RS . . .

    . . . SCRS chassis 0018 was sold new to Matsuda’s “Porsche Museum of Japan,” and was never raced. It has only 1,600 kilometers from new and is completely original down to Pirelli P-7 tires . . .

    The 84 SCRS was almost a duplicate of the 74 3.0 RS. Both weighed about the same, used the same suspension geometry and brakes, and both used a 3.0L single plug MFI engine. The SCRS used high butterfly induction with more aggressive cams to achieve 290 hp while the 3.0 RS used the 2.7 Carrera RS induction for 230 hp. The SCRS engine was closer to a 3.0L RSR engine with single rather than twin plug, and with a custom filter housing and rally muffler. These changes reduced the 315 hp of the 74 high butterfly version of the RSR engine to 290 hp in the 84 SCRS.

    Ten years separated these 2 very special 911s, but not many new engineering concepts were used.
