73RS trailing arms: short and long

I've already done some searching on here and it appears that an RS built before car number 1409 should have long trailing arms and a car built after should have short trailing arms. Is it as simple as that? Is this info correct and if so, is it a hard and fast rule? Are exceptions cause for concern on a car that is reported to be very original? Any other intricacies to consider or differences between M471 and M472?

    Thanks much

It is a good question. We currently have 2 RS in the workshop both later than 1409 and both do have the shorter arms. This has also been correct for 2 other RSs I have worked on and restored bar 1 car. I am thus not 100% sure this can be used as a 100% guaranteed identification marker. When reviewing and assessing RSs this is just one area we look at.

I would not think that there would be a difference in M471 or M472, but I think all the RSR's had the shorter arms. May be the build date has something to do with it, a car after 1409 but build before that number could still have the longer trailing arms. 1410 (mine) has the shorter...
