    Quiet muffler options?

I have a 1970 911T with a stock 2.2. The muffler on my car is on the goofy side, and I'm looking for the quietest muffler I can bolt onto the car that sounds "good". That's usually the factory muffler (but correct me if I'm wrong).

I went in search of a used one, and came away confused by words like Bischoff and Leistritz...What's the difference between these two? Did the mufflers change over the years? If I'm looking at some muffler on eBay, what should I be looking for to ensure it's not just some crap can that may or may not fit?

I've read that most Dansks are on the tinny side, M&Ks are on the loud side, and anything with two outlets is gonna be louder than a single outlet (and could possibly drone), and I don't need much of that...The primary reason I have a 911 instead of a 912 is the sound, so I might as well try and get it right!

Is there anything else I should be looking for? My current default is the Porsche Classic reproduction, but at $1,100...well, I'm hoping I can do better on something used but in good shape.

You could have a fun weekend ditching that, and trying one of these newer laminar designs, if you could develop a proper Y pipe for it, possibly.

    $139

That is interesting! I wouldn't mind some modern internals stuffed into a stock housing, but there's a lot to be said for tuning the muffler to the exact engine, and I'm not sure how much welding I really wanna do...

Been around 911's a long time, never seen that specific muffler.. neat! but agree, kind of goofy.

The Leistritz and Bischoff are both factory offerings, so either would be fine. You should be able to find a nice used one of either brand for $300-$400, so I'd hesitate at spending $1K on the Porsche Classic. I have a Leistrizt with 200K miles and I think it sounds great, just a tad louder than when new I imagine . The Bischoff I had seemed a little tamer, FWIW.

Just be sure it's for a 65-73 and not the 74+ type. The 74+ can look almost identical but won't have as much droop on the single outlet.

If you can't find a good used Leistritz or Bischoff, you will not be disappointed by the Porsche Classic muffler. It is expensive* but it sounds way better than the Dansk one.

    * A new exhaust for any watercooled 911 is way more expensive so $1k is actually not bad I suppose.
