    302831, 2 or 4 screw horn grilles?

Finally completing all the metal work on my car but still have one unsolved issue..
When I bought the car it had 2 screw horn grilles.

The body needed a lot of attention but there were no signs of front damage or anything what could have explained replacement of both fenders.

Now this thread; http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ad.php?t=21429 got me thinking again. Especially the remark about a higher chassis number than mine with 4 screw horn grilles.

Although all the metal work is completed I'm still before paint so can still fairly easy adjust this.

    Any help on this one?

    Thanks!

Depending on the climate where the car was purchsed from its possible that the fenders where replaced. They seem to rust out quite quickly.

If 3 digit numbers in your frt. fenders match the last 3 digits of your VIN you still have your original fenders and you know what you should have. If no numbers stamped in or different from your VIN ..

302928 that lives around SLO CA and has 4 hole grills but if they are original to the car .. ?

I have 302981 and it does have the original front fenders on it as far as I can tell. I remember noticing that they were stamped "981" back in 1990 when I repainted the car. They have the mounting points for the four hole grills, but someone installed the two hole grills sometime before I got the car. The grills are mounted using a strap that bridges the tabs for the original grills and they are obviously homemade from scrap metal. Someday I'd like to find a pair of the proper grills and install them........

Hope the numbers are still visible in the fenders. Believe they are stamped in the head light bucket... Car has been media blasted at least twice but it's worth checking...
But looking at the other numbers it should have 4 screw grilles I believe..

Can someone with an early '65 confirm that the numbers are indeed in the headlight buckets? I know this is the case with '66 and '67. I wonder only because when I owned 300771, I was nearly positive that the LF fender was original to the car, had never been off, and there was definitely no number in the bucket. I suppose it's possible that the fender was replaced so early in the cars life that the replacement was a four screw.
