The 996 reminds me of a Japanese car. An acquaintance described his take that it was more of a Lexus than a Porsche. (I thought Toyota but I'm a little more critical)
They are a cheap thrill if you can get by the known issues (which can be expensive).
I looked at one last year which I could have picked up below wholesale but it was showing "mechanical" signs of an impending RMS failure. BTW; They don't just have to leak.

Rear main seals are not the worst of it. It's the intermediate shaft bearing failures that'll really make you cringe. I have a 200? 997 Tip sitting next to my shop with the motor and trans out because the intermediate shaft bearing exploded and ruined the motor.

Why is it sitting NEXT to my shop? Because the owner spent all his money buying the car and has none left to repair it. It's not inside because, frankly, I don't have enough inside storage to let it take up my floor space FOR THE LAST YEAR.

It's a real waste of a perfectly good car, I suppose. It is a HIGH mileage car - close to 100K - but a new motor from Porsche is roughly $12K installed and comes with a 2-year warranty. The problem is that the car in its current state is worth a pittance ... $10K, tops. Running and driving it's only worth $30K because of the mileage, regardless of whether it has a new motor or not.

What you end up with is a really big paperweight that the owner can't sell because he's in it close to $90K (bought the car new) and is insulted at the $10K offer. So the car sits and rots. And it will continue to sit and rot despite the fact that I have numerous offers from other customers to purchase it and put it back on the road. But the guy won't sell ... it's a stalemate.
