I recall years ago how dealers were installing antennas on the driver's side for convenience in lowering and raising the antenna. I always thought the fuel filler side was crowded. Also recall that it was basically impossible to install a power antenna on the left side due to lack of space.

Power antennas were always installed on the right side, which also crowded the front cooler oil lines. To properly install the antenna on the left required removal of the door, which is why most were factory installed even though a radio may not have been at that time.

The fix is a nylon plug, 3M sealer under the plug lip, then cover it with rubberized undercoat.
The undercoat turns flat black when dry.
