    Shipping Car to Europe?

I have sold my '71 Targa to a gentleman in France, I have been paid via wire transfer so no issues there. When the transport company picks the car up what paperwork besides the bill of sale and car title are required? How does the transfer of ownership/obligation happen when the car is loaded on the carrier? I have never shipped overseas before and want to be sure once the car is taken on the truck my liability is ended. Does the shipping company get the car title that is endorsed by me, normally I give the shipper a copy of the title/bill of sale and overnight the originals to the new owner. The new owner does not speak English very well so communicating is a little challenging. Thanks in advance for your help/advice on this.

    Mike,

I'll try to help here . I have shipped 5 cars from USA to France in the past 2 years.
The best way is to find a trustable carrier (I use West Coast Shipping) with full insurance all the way.
How it has been operated so far with me :
    - BUYER sign a contract FIRST with the carier/shipper (liability lies with the one who signs)
    - Carrier comes, takes pictures (I always ask the vendor to as well) and pick the car - the responsibility as soon as the car is handled by the carrier, is with the shipping company.
    - Original Title is with the car for international shipping (seller send a copy to the buyer) , the bill of sale with the buyer (via email or ...)
    - The carrier get it to the port, and shipping company handles it Title is with the car - a series of documents is asked by the shipping company from the buyer (Bill of sale, payment, delivery address, shipping contract and insurance etc.)
    - Shipping company MUST provide pictureSSS of the car BEFORE getting into the container.
    - A bill of lading is then opened and communicated to the buyer with all shipping details.
    - Car is loaded to the vessel and "vogue petit bateau"
    - Delivered to the chosen port, receiving company asks for a new series of document from the shipper (Bill os Sale, title copy, and few custom forms) - car goes through the custom, receiving company informs the buyer , and if everything is ok, the car is ok to be picked up by the buyer.

Done it 5 times without any issues.

If your buyer is in France, and because we are all friends in the ESR community, he/she can call me (will give my phone nb via PM)

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Xavier, shipping is being handled by a USA member here (French Gentleman) I got a call from the shipping broker he is using so broker is trying to place the order with a carrier. I have used Applewood Motor Transport out of W. Virginia which transports Lamborghini's from Port of Virginia throughout Midwest/Chicago they are very good. Sounds like the broker involved here may pickup the car and take to a central location and wait for a shipper assignment. Thanks for clarifying the liability process for me.
