Thread: Lost Wheel Locking Lug Nut Socket

Lost Wheel Locking Lug Nut Socket

Unbelievable. I've had the dang socket in my 911's tool kit roll, for literally decades. A bit before COVID, I swapped the locking nuts to the 912, and I would have thought I moved the socket to the 912's tool kit. But it's now nowhere to be found.

I bought these from Performance Products probably in the late 80's. The nuts are round all the way around, except for one flat.

I'm thinking that I might use a larger socket, with a flat piece of steel that I jam in at the flat.

I still have the original nuts and plan on putting them on. No one is going to steal my wheels without the rest of the car!

But before I get aggressive, does anyone know a source of those sockets?

    Jay,
No don't know of a new source, but I have a set of four of the locking lugs with the socket for sale. Probably from the '80s, they were on my 70S when I bought her and she went into storage around '85 judging from the registrations I have.

They are probably the same product. Judging by the socket, there were probably several different shapes that they built them. I doubt they were all keyed the same.

Can you tell me the width of the flat?

You might try this method. There are several similar videos on the web.

In my experience (20+ years in tire/wheel sales and service), the only thing wheel locks are good for is frustrating the owner and authorized service people.

The thing that worries me about that method is that the nuts are alloy. And in short order, I will round it off.

I'm now thinking this is the best bet, if I can get one small enough:
