Most similar to the original Boge shocks and inserts available today are Sachs brand. Boge was the shock division of Sachs (or maybe the parent company of both Boge and Sachs). They have phased out the Boge name now and market them as Sachs.

Came across this thread...I am restoring an early 1973S Targa with low miles that was parked in 1983. It has Bilsteins all around, and while its possible they aren't original, they certainly look original when looking at the bolts and markings etc.

My 73S targa came factory with boge struts but the inserts must have been exchanged when near new for bilstein. The rears green shocks had early 73’ date codes .
My 73’E targa came factory with Koni so don’t understand the claim that targas were only supplied with Boges.

Maybe so Robert but then how would you explain this decal from a 9/72 dated rear shock on the very original 11/72 built RS #197.
I have no way of knowing for sure but pretty sure it was there from day 1.

Hi Clyde .
If it’s a decal it’s been made too restore a vintage shock. The later bilstein replacements were stenciled. The photo of the bilstein in Georg’s book is of a restored car. Not an in period photo.
The bilstein rears were marked with 8mm cloth tape as were the boges, sometimes in blue or yellow cloth tape, front and rear. The bilsteins front struts did not have the tape marker.
What’s your bilstein code?
Regards

From the 72 Service Information. This is where I got the notion about Boge shocks for Targa only, Koni specifically.
Here is a picture of my front shocks - sorry its not full - but you can see the Green top and the bottom is black. I am ordering some new inserts, but this post and this picture have made me reconsider if I am correct ordering the "Bilstein inserts for Bilstein shocks" vs the "Bilstein insert for Boge shocks"?
