Hi guys, my steering wheel groans and screeches when I turn it, exacerbated by cold weather. Is it the horn contact? What kind of grease should I use?
Just finished a 3,200 km tour of Scotland and the screeching is now much worse.![]()

Could be something loose, or the bearings in the steering column…..not hard to replace.

Remove your horn button and tighten the 3 screws on the underside that hold on the metal stuff. It should take 2 minutes and you will be good to go. You may want to order a new rubber cuff in the process, if it's old and brittle.

This is a much better response than my original response. I don't know what I was thinking, even though your 3 screws probably need tightening. You should remove your steering wheel (a very easy operation is you have a proper socket) and check your turn signal canceller ring. One of the 2 screws has probably come loose. It is unlikely that your steering column bearing is the cause of your annoying noise.

Grease the horn contact ring as you said, the type of grease is immaterial.

FWIW i have used dielectric (PTFE silicone) grease on the horn ring and it fixes this issue, but it returns after about 2,000 miles. I wonder if there's a thicker grease (per Ed's comment) that might last longer. I didn't realize until Ed's comment that dielectric grease and other kinds of grease do not conduct electricity (they prevent corrosion and improve conductivity if wet). I learn something new every day here...
