I noticed the other day, the covering of a 356C gas tank looks like the same material.
I think Stoddard reproduces the tanks. If the material could be found in a larger piece, it then could be molded to the shape. Part #555.100.00

There is a guy that sells the proper tar mats for 356 cars and it is supposed to be excellent but expensive. I’ve heard the Stoddard stuff is not right at all.
My recollection of a sombrero was a tarboard material that seemed to be formed in place. So it would be some sort of square that was headed up and placed on top of the tank. I’m pretty sure the shape will happen when installed. I’d like to know or buy a sombrero if somebody comes up with some. I have a RHD 65 in restoration now that needs one.
yes.
it is an industrial 3or4mm roofing felt.
as expected,
each manufacturer has differing patterns and even printed lines
the task is to find that particular maker
the stuff is actually relatively cheap
you buy it by the roll
here is a picture of roofing felt i found at a San Fransico roofing supply company.
