    Oil Mystery

I've got a 1973 2.4 911E which is new to me. When changing the oil and adding fresh oil (9 quarts to start) I ran the motor up to temp and saw that the dipstick was not reading any oil. The oil was measured with the engine running. I added 2 additional quarts for a total of 11 quarts of oil in the motor. The dipstick now shows oil on the very bottom of the dipstick , below the minimum mark, when the engine is at temp (180 degrees) and when the engine is running. I am not measuring with the motor off.

Has anyone experienced this or have any recommendations on where to start investigating? The motor is not leaking and definitely has 11 quarts of oil in it and it has good oil pressure. Is the sump possibly broken and not pumping the oil to the tank?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Cheers
    Pete

I know this might sound trivial but is the car running when you are measuring the oil level on the dipstick?

The original post has been amended to indicate the engine was running when measuring the oil at operating temperature. Thank you!

Its been a few years but believe I remember it has a different dip stick
Also recall a few posts showing variations of dip sticks

First make sure you have the correct dipstick, secondly a 73, from memory' seems to take 11 or so quarts. So add 1 more quart at a time and keep checking stick with fully warmed oil, if need be drive it and put a load on it to really get some temperature in it. See what the stick shows with 11 quarts in it. If reading at least halfway up your stick is correct.

Could it be a later oil tank as discussed in this thread? https://www.early911sregistry.org/fo...-oil-tank-1973

My procedure after an oil change was to start with 9 quarts then take it for a drive to fully warm up as Ed said then check the level. Oil tends to expand with heat. Better to be a quart low than to have it spit out into the overflow line.
