Thread: Are G-series 911s worth buying?

We are all subject to the same motor vehicle laws no matter what we drive. That said "it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow". My early nines are fast enough for me.

What I love about the F models is the lighter weight. It feels just right to me. The G model cars include refinements and features that added a bit of weight, as well as comfort and convenience. Both are great to drive and for those who say they are slow I think there is a difference between underpowered when new and slow by modern standards. While a modern economy car may accelerate to 60 mph faster than a 50 year old air cooled Porsche, a 911 doesn’t run out of steam at 80 mph+ the way underpowered cars from the same time period do. A 911 will happily cruise on the highway at speeds many cars from the 70’s and 80’s would struggle to reach. A 911 has plenty of passing power on the open road and generally feels like it has power in reserve while cruising. The fact that the 911 doesn’t feel like it is struggling or underpowered is one of the reasons it is so satisfying to drive.

I have an ‘86 and love it, as does my wife. It’s not as high strung as a long hood, and at the same time more relaxed that my 997 S. I really enjoy it, and boy are the G-body cars reliable.

I prefer the 901 over the 915 and G50. I had a 4 and a 6 914 so I guess it's just that I have more miles on a 901. I also have a Rennshift that works very well. The shift knob is about 2 to 3 inches from the steering wheel and the brake pedal was shortened 1.5 inches. I don't like having to raise my foot to use the brake pedal. I just pivot my foot laterally.

i have owned my 911SC for close to 30 years and it has been a great car - my first introduction to the Porsche world. i will also say it has been bulletproof - very reliable and easy to maintain. i would still prefer to drive my '72 hands down any day. particularly because my '72 is a hotrod, it is much faster, nimbler and an absolute blast to drive. the SC feels heavy and sluggish in comparison - but likely would not have felt this way if my '72 was stock as comparison. what my SC has going for it is that it is a Targa - so that gives me a different reason to drive that car compared to the '72. having owned a 993 as well, i would say that is the perfect blend of classic 911 with more modern elements - wish i did not sell that car.

The least expensive G50 I know of is the 964 Cabriolet. $45K with lots of bells and whistles for someone coming from a liquid cooled car.

The original post is sort of, Can you tell me what I would like to eat?
What is the mission and environment that you drive in?
Hot climate, poor road conditions, crowded/traffic , highway or back roads, WE or daily,...

Anyways definitely the case with the following post. My 964 HR feels ingot like and at times sluggish and remote . My SWB 2.2S HR feels alive and faster. I know this is not the case.
Do you want a semblance of relaxed and climate controlled environment ? Or a sports car with the compromises?

At the mentioned 40K if you don't want a project you'll be back in an IMS 996.

Definitely the case on Longhoods vs Later models.
