I am not sure what this information ADDS to the debate, but here is the interesting data on my 1970 S Coupe, a very early car, serial #0044,
I am the second owner of this car, it was purchased new in Bakersfield, CA with no sunroof, power windows, and dealer A/C.
When I ordered and received a COA 2 years back from PCNA, it listed the power windows, a Blau Frankfurt radio (probably correct), and two black leatherette sport seats!
The car has standard seats in black leatherette, so if the COA is correct the original owner must have removed the sport seats and put in standard ones.
I purchased the car through a relative of the original owner, and received many documents with it. No record of a seat exchange anywhere..
Inconclusive, I know, but I just thought I'd share. Yes. I have sport seats for the car, as yet unrestored, and now it will cost me more to have them restored than I paid for them in the first place..

A great example of who things change throughout the production year without any record of it in any manual is in Konradsheims RS book. There you will find two pages of changes to the 73 model year specified to the day the change was made. Many of these changes are no where to be found in any parts or service manual. Before I bought my 71S I looked for a long time and there are not many to be found, thus not a lot concrete evidence as to the sport seat issue. Like I said I tend to go with the parts manual, with the assumption that there are timeline issues.

    Just a couple of things....

67 and 68 had the sport seats as options for $15 per seat...., option code 9388

1971 parts manual does indeed show the sport seats as stock for the S.

The 1971 parts manual also shows the rear deck lid is aluminum only for the S, not the E. I am the second owner of a 71E and it was original paint when it came to me, and my decklid and license plate panel were both steel, though there is a 71 brochure that states that the 71E did have the aluminum deck lid....

Read the parts manual again, both of my 71 parts catalogs show the E with only the aluminum center panel.

I didn't mention the license panel.....did I......go reread my post Helen......

Yes, to your "post", the rear license panel is "supposed" to be aluminum, but mine isn't....

"though there is a 71 brochure that states that the 71E did have the aluminum deck lid...." What are you talking about brochure? I thought you meant parts catalog, but you mean some sales brochure.

Both.....I've got the 71 parts catalog (no decklid in alum), and there is a brochure for 71 (decklid in alum).....have to find it....

My '67-S factory sales brochures shows some "Hugh Hefner" looking dude sitting in a nice standard (albeit houndstooth) seat. He looks ready to "troll".

    I aggree with Jeff..
Also. I believe it has to do something with the previous mention that Porsche was trying to homolagate the 911S for Group 2 in 1971, with the rear extended seats and with sport seats up front because they were thinner.. Therefore , at some point in trying to keep FIA happy,,, Porsche documented the sport seats as standard..
This attempt at Homolagation obviously failed. But the Parts manuals remain and so do a majority number of sport seat equiped 911S's
    But not all...

    Regards, Robert Gross...

PS... in ref. to the aluminum decklids for 1973,, my 911S oddly enough came from the factory with one... it is listed in the parts manual as a possible standard... but it's a rare find...most didn't...

Earlier E's,,, i've only ever seen one that had a factory alu lid..
    There's allways that exception..
