Thread: engine lid rainshield

    engine lid rainshield

    i recently impulse bought a 911 rainshield.
in b.johnson's 'a restorers guide to authenticity' theres no mention of them except a different factory kind for an early 912.

so whats the story with these? are they aftermarket - and do they serve any purpose whatsoever? seems to direct water TO the electrics and distributor if anything.

another thing i noticed is that some friends cars with rainshields have a screw hole where i don't. i can see from the recent thread on rear wiper installation that a couple of your cars don't have that hole either. do later models have a hole here?

    mines a 911 69T.

    Paul,

These were an option on the late SCs or early 3.2s.
I came across a pic of one a while ago and checked it out on the parts cd - yes it has a number ! I can re check it for you if you don't have the cd.
I have no idea if it was for a particular market or not but I have never seen one in my travels !
Is it effective when you hose the back part of the car ?

    Cheers,
    Dennis.

    dennis you're a genius. thanks!
but looking at that pic, my buddy and i both have ours installed upside down - or your picture is wrong. but if the picture is correct wont it collect tons of water in it?
i've not tried washing mine with it on yet.
yeah if you can check that nr it would be great!
interesting to see the screw holes in the lid on that shot too.

    Paul,

I'm not an expert on the parts cd but here is what I could see.
    called an air duct
    p/n is 911 512 109 01
    from '77 to '80 my
looks like home market only - D - Germany (??)
    for 911 / Carrera 3
I can't remember where I got this pic from - maybe from Pelican - I collect pics of the unusual such as this one .
Gumby - the 912 water shield is much more square than this one - a different part !

But what purpose does it serve? Does it lead cold air to the engine? Or heat away from it? Or was it maybe developed for homeland Germany only to keep the german rain out of the engine compartment?

I guess air duct suggests it directs external cold air into the fan / factory air intake. but i could be wrong. why do germans and not americans in arizona need that? its a good question.

but if this piece is a short lived piece - and germany only, there must be a very small X number of cars out there with those extra holes in the lid for mounting? has anyone got them / seen them?
bit of a mystery this actually - it cant just be a standard bolt on option if ALL lids lack the holes?? they must have changed lids for germany during those years (And therefore have different porsche P/N's) or...?

here's a good friends - it lacks the holes also.
    intrigued.
