Thread: Black tar sealant for shock tower

Black tar sealant for shock tower

What works to reseal the shock towers? It looks like roofing tar, but the stuff I've tried doesn't harden sufficiently.

Whatever it is, is this also the best stuff to seal the gap between the inner and outer sections of the front fender, behind the wheel?

I believe it is called Dum Dum and it is a type of strip caulk. Try your local Automotive finish supplier.

Yah--"dum-dum". I use 3M strip caulk,#08578. Try here, or your local autobody supplier.

It never really dries either, but not as sticky and gooey as roofing tar.

I don't think it's dum-dum. I think it is asphaltic, a little like the floorboard sound pads. Isn't dum-dum grey? The stuff I chipped off my shock towers was pretty hard and was black.

I don't think it's dum-dum (in the Navy we called it "monkey shyte"). It looks like it was brushed on.

    Talking this would work

it looks like butyl rubber/asphalt caulk.
you can get it in tubes at a hardware store.
its sold as roof repair caulk.
dispense it into a pie tin, thin it with mineral spirits and brush it on.
it will skin over in an hour or so, be soft for about a month, and get progressively harder. i bet in 35 years it will be brittle and hard too!
or you could get a can of 3M rubberized underseal, spray it in a cup and then brush it on.

Thank you, all, for your answers.

I tried some asphalt caulk, and it just doesn't set up. I want to put on SKS after, so I want a firm foundation in the fender gap.

I am not a fan of the 3M rubberized undercoating, though I think most of their other products are terrific.

The strip caulk comes in gray (not so sticky) and black (quite sticky). I have both, but they are not the right thing, in this application, in my opinion.

It looks similar to the Wurth hi-build undercoating to me. That is what I'm considering using. It will seal well and look right, in my opinion.
