Can I use this oil cooler (911.107.041.00 listed in PET for 72-73) on my 71 911S engine(PET oil cooler up to 71 listed as part 901.107.041.02)

John,
The fittings on the top will be larger on the later cooler... they changed in '72.
So, you'll have a challenge adapting a 'stub hose' match between your early hard lines and a late cooler.
You can always go to a 'hose and fitting' place and have them made up...
However, the distances that the two stub hoses bridge is VERY precise, starting and ending from two fixed points.
Someone who has done this should give you some hints...
Hope this helps,
Cheers

How cool is THAT......
Thanks Rick,
However....
Still not sure how these adaptors work without making custom stub hoses up front...
Maybe I'll give Chuck M. a call.....

Just gave Chuck M. at Elephant a call, and John would still not be out of the woods on the front end of the install....
So John, the questions would be:
- Does your '71 have a cooler now?
- If so, why do you want to change it, seeing the capacity of the early cooler, and the 'late' early cooler are virtually identical.
- If you don't have a cooler now, would you be OK with non-original later hard lines....... If that's OK then all you'd need is the Elephant adaptors.
- If you want original hard lines then you would still have the challenge making custom stub hoses at the cooler...
People in the know... now want to know....
Cheers

The reason I wondered about this is that I made a crack in the cooler when I tried to get the hose off. I saw one for sale at the Pelican forum with the later part number, and wanted to make sure I could use it before I comitted to buy it. It might be possible to weld the crack I made? If not I will have to find an early used one. Thanks for all the help but I would like it to be as close to original as possible, also the hoses.

Sorry John,
I miss-read your initial post... I didn't read "on my '71S engine"
I thought this whole issue was about an external oil cooler...
I'm not sure about repairing engine oil coolers... when mine was leaking we replaced it.
It would seem that if the old and new coolers were interchangeable, the Elephant adaptor would do the trick...
Sorry again for adding confusion to your simple question...
Cheers,

Not your fault Chuck, I did not describe my question well enough. The crack dos not make a leak, the crack is in the "ring" that holds the pipe at the bottom of the cooler. If I try to get the two big nuts loose I might damage it more.... But I will have to get that hose off anyway, so I guess I will try to weld it afterwords.

Hey John, I think I have a cooler from an engine WITHOUT catastophic consequences. Wasn't there something else I said I would look for as well? I have a free afternoon tomorrow so let me know.
Rick
P.S. I misread the initial post as well. It's hell getting old!

John, I think that crack could be welded up, no problem. The spot where you broke it is just a support for the oil pressure pump suction pipe. There shouldn't be a risk of leaking or engine bearing contamination with welding in that spot.
