Thread: Another hot rod

    Footrest for driver's left foot

The weather stinks back East and the market is worse. So' it might be nice to for all the guys freezing in the garage to catch up on the hot rod and the progress made in the past couple of weeks.

Here you see the OEM foot rest installed with factory style spot welds. While we tend to call these bits "dead pedals," the factory literature refers to the piece as a foot rest. The first application of this part was the Sports Kit equipped 911 and 911S of MY 1967. It was used by the factory on all subsequent race prepped 911 chassis including ST.

This OEM footrest is finished in green metal etching primer and came from a fellow board member out on Long Island, NY.

For reference, attached is a period photo of a factory prepared MY 1971 ST interior showing the relevant detail of the pedal cluster. This period image provided courtesy of McKlein Photo. It documents the mounting location of the foot rest, welded onto the inner foot well as per Race Department practice.

    Pan in Full Color

When last seen, you will recall that the pan had been stripped by hand, straightened a bit, primed and prepped for color.

This image shows the "undercoat delete" look that we were after.

The factory ST specifications in the Sports Purposes manual refer to this Special GT Group 4 preparation technique as "No stone guard and soundproof matting."

The paint in this pic is still fresh and will flatten down a notch or two.

    Fuel Bay and Engine Bay

The fuel bay is all in color.

Next up the project will require a trial fit of twin mfi fuel pumps, 100L gas tank, cross over lines for the coolers, etc.

It is our aim to conform the details of the fuel bay to factory preparation techniques as per MY 1971 for ST.

    Engine bay sealed in color

The engine bay was shot in color as well.

The shop was doing the RSR style gussets on another car and I just liked the way they looked and asked that they be duplicated on the hot rod.

Perhaps there might have been a rally car application for these on a pre '73 car although as Gib has pointed out on another thread this mod was meant to reinforce the chassis for the strains of the threaded, aluminum bodied, heim jointed, coil over Bilstein rear shocks equipped with helper springs as used on the RSR.

I have not found a period photo to document these gussets on any pre MY 1973 cars. Raj's fabulous 2,5/2,8 car is as close as I have seen with its vestigial gussets.

There are no part numbers listed for these gussets in the Spare Parts List Carrera M491 1973 2,8 LTR indicating that they were fabricated in the Race Department for those RS L chassis converted to M491.

As mentioned, I just liked the look.

    speed racer

    Raj:

    Great observation.

Every car in the shop has its steering wheel in situ.

There was an exposure problem on the attached image but it is included as it provides a period 2,3 ST detail not shown before. Perhaps you will notice what that is.

    Last one for tonight.

Thanks to all for the help on the project.

    ANDIAL 129 Engine Case

    Hi Rick,

I am envious as I have not seen the color in daylight yet. It was back inside this morning in the pre-assembly area. Hope you told the guys they are doing a great job. I think I know one reason why you can't wait to see it done!

There are some updates to share with the board and I will post some pics and the usual turgid prose today.

First off, we cut open the carton that arrived from Ollie's earlier this week. The ANDIAL 129 case had been sent there for some repairs, modifications and an inspection to see if everthing was still straight and true.

Ollie's recognized the shuffle pin job they did in 1982 as their own work. They did all of the ANDIAL machine work back in the day so it was nice that they met up with an old friend again after all these years. Note the old boat tailed mains.

This is an early 7R engine case. It had never had the oil bypass update so that was first up on the work order.

Next the boring bar was run through the mains to clean up a couple of low spots on the main bearing saddles.

All of the old timeserts were removed and replaced.

They also modified the case to accept a modern dry sump pump. We are thinking about using a GT3 oil pump.

A couple of miscellaneous repairs were required. You can see the area in one of the spigots that was welded and re-bored.

Next the case was treated to a good thorough cleaning and finally dolled up a bit to look new again.

A number of readers inquired about the mounting point for the mfi race pump support bracket. There is simply a hole drilled and tapped into the case; there is no special boss.

The case halves did not require milling.

Here are some pics of Ollie's handiwork on the old 7R engine case.

This case was fresh out of the carton when the pics were taken and when you run your hand over the clean "Elektron" magnesium, it feels magical.

2,4 cores used for the old ST heads

Next we opened the box from Ollie's that contained the old twin plug cylinder heads. The heads were sent out for inspection, repairs, cleaning and re-assembly.

The heads are dated 2-72 indicating that they are original 2,4 castings. These are the original heads from ANDIAL 129 that came on the used race dept engine.

The ports for both intake and exhaust are 41mm and were left untouched.

Ollie's updated the heads with beryllium seats for exhaust valves.

The heads cleaned up nicely and look new again.

    More floor details

The floors were sprayed with some satin black details along the transmission tunnel and door sills to give a factory look with some overspray fogged in along the edges.

The mounting tabs for the rear interior panels were cut off and and the raw metal was sealed up with satin black paint.

The crows feet were similarly sealed up with a liberal coat of the Porsche restorer's all purpose aid: "rally black."

    Satin black footwells and dash

The footwells were sprayed satin black.

The dash pad and lower dash trim were removed at this point and the dash and instrument binnacle re-sprayed satin black to match.

The third image shows the result of all the labor to strip inside the door jambs in front of the hinge post - nicely painted oil cooler lines coming up from the door sill and into the wheel well.

Porsche certainly put beautiful bends on the through-the-sill oil lines of the 2,2S.
