what about the Fittipaldi 3200 ???
around 1970 : the Fittipaldi brothers took Porsche brakes ( drums !! ) a VW platform,2 VW engines ( 2 x 1600 = 3200 ) coupled them at 90 degrees, put them in mid engine position, with a Porsche gearbox, forced aircooling with ducts to all cylinder pairs, used oversize tires and covered that with a flared fiberglass beetle body...now the kicker...they drove faster than the Alfa 33's and the Lola T 70 and had the lap record for quite a while at Interlagos.....will dig up the picture- car was scrapped a few years later.....

Not a factory prototype but...
Fageols-Porsche, 1953
Two(!) 356 engines coupled longitudial in front.
Turbine-like front air channel provided cooling.
According to Huschke von Hanstein in acceleration faster than a 550 Spyder but slow in turns.
Featured unique security "Targa" roll-bar. Note Porsche 356 wheel hubcaps.
Pic shows the car at 1953 US race in Albany, Georgia.
At rear note factory 550 spyder which participated too on this race prior to be sent
to 1953 Mexico Carrera Panamericana.

As a former Studebaker owner I'm very familiar with the 542 story. I donated most of my back issues of the SDC monthly to my old club but I may still have the issue with their 542 article around; will search.
I also recall that Curtiss-Wright (major investor in Studebaker-Packard) commissioned Porsche to install a 356 drivetrain in a Studebaker Lark. The rationale was to use the Lark as a test mule for a potential rear-engined, aircooled Studebaker subcompact to be produced in 1961-62. That never came to fruition but the prototype Lark supposedly still exists.

This car sounded neat, and if there was a photo of the car itself posted prior. It seems to not be viewable anymore. So I thought I would post the photos I could find. If anyone ever has a pic of the engine instalation . I would love to see it. Apparently , two examples of this car were built
"2 units were built by Autohaus Nordstadt (Hannover) in 1972" . The builder was Günther Artz.
These photos seem to be contemporary (I think those are 16" fuchs so at least not 1972/3).

914/6 prototype
there's a ton of cool details on the car
it's the same car that's featured on the 914 brochure (next to a 917)
I helped to "concours prep" it in 2004 (we cleaned it with a broom and a firehose, inside and out)
