What would you look for as far as upcoming repair and maintenance costs?

When I contacted my local Porsche Dealership's Service Manager --- my old M3 mechanic --- he told me service costs are similar to the Turbo . . . ~$800-1200 every 10k miles. Using an independent, I could knock that down 30%. The only other regular expense would probably be tires; the rest of the car is bullet-proof.
I think of it this way: given the mileage and condition, if this were a Carrera RS -- what would it be worth? And this'll do 194 mph. With 993 built.

I agree..........
Good question.....
Another question; if you could buy a mint low mileage GT3 for an additional $10,000. would you? This car has to be a low $30K car to become compelling to an enthusiast otherwise spend extra and buy a pampered car.

Personally? No. I won't pay money for something I'll just use up in a few years time. Low miles might make sense to a 'Collector.' But I'm a 'User,' so I focus on overall condition, service records, clean structure and sheet-metal, and all the systems work. To me, a good car is a good car, irrespective of the mileage. (Besides, my 'old' cars look better after 100k mi with me than when I first bought them, anyway!)
(IMHO, Collectors, in general, are retards. I mean, getting stuff and not using it for what it was made for is like like having Heidi Klum as your wife --- then bragging about never laying a hand on her. What's with that? Shiny cars in garages are like movie-star corpses in a morgue --- and painted floors and pretty signs on the walls don't make 'em any less deader. To me, miles on the odo and battle scars on the bow are all badges of honor, to proudly display. Not an excuse to push the price down. So I'll let the Collectors argue about what's 'correct' and 'properly patinated.' I'll be out driving.)
And like I said, what would a Carrera RS in this condition be worth?
Or, to put it still another way ---- when was the last time you heard of someone turning down an RS (or 275 GTB, or Gullwing, or Shelby) because of miles?
More than anything else, color might influence my choice. Other than that? As long as a thorough PPI comes back clean, and I can get insurance on it . . . I'm in. Any car I get will only get better being with me.
Bold statement. (And IMHO, an enthusiast is just a car bum with a better credit score!) But I would ask myself this question:
How many miles could I have driven any GT3 . . . . while I was waiting for the 'right car.'
At the 'right price.'
Life is short, my friend. And in this life, we only get so much seat time . . . then we're done.
So.
While there are roads to drive, and special cars around to drive them with, well . . . I'm not much for waiting.
PS And if you wanna pay the gas and return air-fare . . . . I can deliver that '69 to your door-step, like ---- this week-end! Just 'clear-bra' the nose, and let's go!
Dead serious, Dude. Something that nice just shouldn't sit.

Rick,
Sorry, I interpretted this reference to the RS as an inference to collectability. In the light of collectability, I would rather spend $10,000 extra.
If $s were the concern and I wasn't viewing it as a investment I would still consider another car because of the standard upkeep of a 83,000 mile performance car would easily swallow the additional $10,000.
My 69S, the motor has 1000 miles and given my schedule it was just too risky. Can't wait to recieve the car!

No, I'm sorry, Mac --- I was making a comparison in terms of 'use.' Let me try to clarify.
It seems to me that a Carrera RS (or a 275 GTB, Gullwing, etc) is a collectable more than a car, with its value determined by something other than mileage or condition. Does anyone consider maintenance or mileage buying a 'collectable'? Kinda doubt it. (Kinda get the feeling no one actually drives these, any more.)
On the other hand, the GT3's condition --- its fitness for use --- seems to be more of a factor, judging by all the attention to mileage, maintenance costs, etc. No one 'collects' GT3s, do they? Not this one, anyway. Heck, some maniac actually used his --- 83k mi worth!
Now, I also assume people have some familiarity with (as in 'having driven') the GT3 --- something beyond just looking at pictures, reading price guides and bench-racing 'numbers.' I've driven several GT3s. (Please tell me you have.) And all I can say is, IMHO, as a User . . . . $43k is an utterly absurd price for this remarkable car.
Well, the GT3's running costs don't seem high, and I haven't checked insurance, but, even with tires . . . $10k would last me 3 or 4 years.
On the other hand . . . consider what you spent on your '69.
What you'll spend shipping it.
Maintaining it.
Insuring it.
Buying 'goodies' for it.
And how many miles you'll drive it.
Then drive a GT3.
All 'collectability' aside --- all performance aside --- which car would you rather drive? To work? In the rain? Across country?
What's that worth?
And that's my whole point with posting this.
A GT3 is not a collectable. (At least not this one.)
A GT3 is not an investment
It is a nice regular, modern, maintainable, insurable, 192 MPH car --- for ~$40k . . . that will (performance-wise) pretty much absolutely annihilate a lot of investable collectiments.
