Thread: Ultimate ST thread

  1. #231
Here is a pic from the Carrera RS book showing the development of the RSR features. This car was renumbered from a 72 ST into 911 360 0002, which later became the Martini #3 press car and #107 at the 73 Targa Florio. It shows the front oil cooler, with what looks like somewhat roughly hand laid fiber glass surrounding the oil cooler. This car with the rudimentary rear spoiler ran at the Austria Ring in July 72, so we know that the factory had by then felt that the front location was a superior location for an oil cooler, especially when they needed the driver's side fender for the transmission cooler. This car still used the steel rear ST bumpers without bumperettes, widened to fit the crude flares.

We don't have documentation when the factory started offering these front mounted oil coolers for the STs, but we know that during the 72 GT season, some STs were using this configuration.

    To confirm : in my data base, 4833 QC 91 registered in FRANCE , 15 may 1973 as a 911 TC VIN : 9110101605

I can finally help contribute something to this thread!

    Gib,

Here's a link to download a slightly less worn copy of Christophorus No. 103: http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/373/103fz.jpg It's almost 3500x2000 so it should be big enough for anybody's desktop background.

Carl, thanks for posting that high resolution picture from Christophorus. I have been worrying about the deterioration of that issue's cover. Now I will have a really good version to just double click on anytime I want. It's like dying and going to 'ST Heaven.'

Here is a pic from another race (Targa maybe) of the red/white ST peaking out from behind the orange #8. showing the front oil cooler. The lines and cooler itself look very much like the unprotected version on the Strahle ST.

Another detail that shows up here is that the diagonal on the roll hoop sometimes went from the passenger side down, and sometimes from the driver side down. Were these diagonals welded in by the factory, or were they added by the race team?

When making my tribute car, I saw an ST with this type of oil cooler opening so I went for it. I went for a little bigger openings. I did not have to move the oil cooler/plumbing from my previous bumper so it made it easy.

    Toad Hall

I would be interested to know more about the history of the Toad Hall (Nr 15) in the photograph below:

Is it an ST, are those RSR flares on the back and where is it now?

    Thx

    Martin

    Martin:

That picture may have come from the 73 Daytona 24 race. Here are 2 other pics from that event, which show a pretty beat up #15. In that front shot you can see the sharp shoulder of the rear flare. I would guess they were hand fabricated to accomodate the 11x15 Fuchs which the car ran with in that race. I think both Toad Hall STs are accounted for and restored, but I don't have any details on the current owners.

I'm not sure which car this is, but this is the Toad Hall compound in the Daytona paddock during RRII in '01.
