Singel MSD for twin plug engine

I built my 3.0L with twin plug heads with the intention of adding a twin plug distributor later. Now I'm ready but the question came up "can you run twin plug on a street/autox/track car with one MSD and two coils?"

So I checked with J&B Racing here in Florida and they say it should be ok. What do others think and do you have any experience with one MSD/twin plugs?

    Kent,

You certainly can run two coils from a single MSD unit, however the output to each coil isn't as strong (although it may be academic for your application).

Personally, I prefer the redundancy of two independent ignitions, just in case one has a problem. Old habits/experiences die hard,....

    Hi Steve

Good to hear from you. Yeah I was thinking about that as well. Might start with one MSD but leave room to put another one in if I get cold feet. Oh I now live in Florida not Oregon so it has nothing to do with "cold".

I would go with 2 MSD units also. I'm selling my twin plug Electromotive setup if you are so inclined.

I've been running a single MSD driving two coils on my RSR spec 3 liter engine for the last several years. I was told that's the way MSD recommends you run them and also that it was the way the factory wired them on the early race cars (with a switch to activate the redundant CDI in case of ignition failure).

    Twin Plug

We have run several rally cars with Twin Plugs and single MSD (6ALN) for several years - never had a problem.

Just curious, I ran my old 2.7L engine with one Mallory 6AL with no problems. When I put in the 3.0L it wouldn't run the tach. Another story but I modified the tach and put in the MSD. Is there any difference between the MSD and Mallory?
