Early dealer badges mounted on engine lid? Anyone have one?

    Hey All,

I recently purchased a '66 911 and I noticed there are two holes about 3" apart that are centered on the engine lid just below the grill. I was told this might be from a dealer ID plate. Sort of a badge that was put on cars of that era. Has anyone seen one of these? Does anyone have one? I'd be very interested in seeing what one looks like.

I assume those holes might have been for a rally badge.

    Cheers,
    Dan

The french importer Sonauto mounted their metallic badge on all of their cars.
On 356's, it was usually just below the grill, above the P O R S C H E script, see pic.

On 911's, however, they got mounted at the very end tip of the engine lid, i.e. below
    the P O R S C H E script.
Keep in mind, below the grill, all later MY did had mounted the 911x sign...

    on 356's

Those are great pictures. Thanks for the information. I guess one way to settle what I really have is to have someone with a 68+ tell me what the hole spacing is for the 911 badge. If the mounting holes are 3" apart then we know my engine lid was taken from a later car. My car does have the correct connected letter PORSCHE emblem and the early 911 angle badge.

BTW does someone make a reproduction Sonauto badge (or does someone have one to sell?)

I was just going to suggest that it may be for a Sportomatic badge, but Sportomatics weren't available in 1966. Is it possible you may have a later lid?

It seems I do have a later lid. It's interesting that they took the time to put the proper PORSCHE badge and fill the holes for the later separated letters, but didn't bother to fill the two 911 holes. Odd.

This is where my 3" spacing picture came from. Does your lid have a center divider in the opening? Later lids eliminated this.

My 73S was delivered to its first owner through Sonauto Motors in Paris. The engine lid was drilled to affix the badge.

    Hey John,

I do have the rib, and we compared today and it seems that the proximity of my holes is different than the location of the 67+ 911 badges. I now think it could have been a dealer badge or a rally tage of some sort.

    The mystery continues....

I think a gold Sonauto would look spectacular there.

So I've decided to cover the holes with an appropriate rally badge. The one I found is from the AVD Germany Rally from 1966. Moreover, the winning team was driving a 911 and included the person who survived James Dean's fatal crash. It doesn't have any mounting holes, so I'm going to fabricate a low profile stainless mounting platform that will hold it in place.
