best way to remove (water pump) sealant?

My cam towers have the remains of what looks like water pump sealant. Using something sharp can cause small scratches. Any suggestions for alternatives?

    Thanks

Thinners/ panelwipe on a rag should break it down.

Try the Permatex spray on gasket remover. Works great, but don't get it near magnesium, or be very careful if you do.

Lab quality single edge blades work well, too, but not on the rough are of that casting, where most of your old sealer lies.

    first....remove the water pump.....

the color reminds me of the old indian head shellac, yes, commonly used on (water cooled cars) around the water pump.....I've seen some permatex products, including some new foaming, low VOC stuff that claims to remove indian head shellac.....in the end, this stuff has the reputation of being really tough to remove.

Richard, try some MEK, that should soften it up, or even paint stripper.

Brass toothbrush and paint remover, I doubt you can get MEK in Europe or even the nastier paint removers that contain it. It is being phased out worldwide due to extreme health hazard. But it sure works great!

try soaking it overnight in Lacquer thinner. That will dissolve just about anything.
