Thread: 72 Factory AC System

    72 Factory AC System

I thought I would document what a 72 factory installed AC system looked like as many cars had dealer installed systems, and other variations exist also. Here are pics showing the various components in rough condition, but everything is shown except the condenser that fits under the rear lid.

Interesting, I guess that round hold in the front apron is an air intake for the fan on the front condensor, which blows down?

How do the lines run under the car? Are they in the rocker panel or outside? Do lines run under both sides of the car, or just one?

    Mike:

Yes, the front hole is for the blower which forces air over the condenser. There is a metal box raised inside the front pan to house the condenser below. It has a curved up end which the blower fits into.

Here are pics of the lines which run on both sides of the car. The first 2 pics are the driver side and the second 2 are the passenger side. Also, the York compressor and the lid condenser.

    Ah, I see, it goes

    Compressor->Decklid condensor->down drivers side rocker->Front well condensor->receiver/dryer->evaporator->down passenger side rocker->Compressor

    Gib,

Are the knee pads the metal framed type or the foam filled type?

Now, if it was a non AC car I would say 100% originally with the foam filled type but, I have a theory about the AC cars with the thin Beru vents. Are they the padded metal framed type?

Also note the tag for the water bottle up by the blower. On factory installed AC the bottle was also relocated. Great pics.

    Thanks

I'm chuckling as I go over this post. A/C is such a common option out here in AZ that I forget that it's an anomaly elsewhere. Unfortunately because we actually have to use it, it's not uncommon for many of the original Weatherhead hoses and fittings to have been replaced with neoprene sheathed hoses over the last 40 years. Rotary compressors are also a common "upgrade" along with double pass rather than single pass condensers.
I always found it interesting that Porsche didn't include an auxilliary oil cooler system along with A/C as the engines self destruct without it.

    Thanks for the post Gib.

Here is a closer pic of the small brackets that allow mounting of the washer bottle near the cowl. Also, the hole in the front where the bottle normally went had a rubber plug.

    Michael:

You are correct....the knee pads are metal and not foam filled to better support the AC system.
