Here is the file photo I have for this. After all the years it appears to be silver but I didn't have the chance to remove it and see the under color.
See John Straub's post below for the answer.
If I am recalling correctly, some place along the line the 911 had gold details and the 912 having silver on the dash and rear lid.
Hope this helps.

Interesting question. I had an old NOS emblem that was silver. Sold it on the forum last year:

We have the best authority John Straub (with a perfect car) and he says Silver...That's the reply we all need. Thanks John.
I'll edit my comments above.

Ok so what to do.
Bought the correct 65 66 silver emblem for my 65. Genuine Porsche part number 901 559 303 20. The pin spacing is 37mm. that is nowhere near the 48mm of the emblem Bob refers to (might as well say the the same as the 49mm spacing I measured on the holes in my glove box lid).
In addition the pins on the Porsche item are not long enough to protrude through the wood/lid and get a clip on. I have no idea what application it is that was provided - doesn't seem to me that even if they rearranged the pin location on the emblem that the size is correct. rant over any thoughts?....

Maybe u got a rear lid emblem instead?

Nope I have deck lid emblems, an original with the correct pin spacing for 65 and repro with the later spacing - its not one of those
I'm not convinced the size of the emblem will accommodate 48mm pin spacing - the only conclusion I can make from this is that the currently supplied emblem dimensions must be different to the original. The emblem is the same as being offered out there currently
Perhaps someone can measure an original in their car and post? (mine was gone)
