They probably weren't. She tried to sell one back in Oct. from her 'private stash' to someone that was looking for an original. It was made in 4/29/2010.

Also the '5' is completely different between the two... not that any of that confirms originality, of course...
Carl,
for what it is worth..that was my knob she sold back in OCT. i know for a fact that was that was real because i got it from porsche classic! thus the box from porsche. the ones she sold yesterday were from a purchased from our trip two or threes years back.. we have offered the customers a full refund of the items. but as i say..there was no way to tell them apart. They look so close. the poor woman was just trying to sell something she found.. She should have done more research but it was not our intention to cheat anyone. There was no other pictures to compare too nor a real one on hand..the one on my car looked exactly like the one she sold..We tried to do our best and tried to sell them at a lower price of what the market sells them for.
thanks
Lemon
Lemon's comments would end the criticism for me if I was one of the buyers.
In any event, let's continue this thread as I intended when I started it - to try and figure out the authenticity of 901 shift knobs.
Thanks,
JohnA

Lemon,
I never said it wasn’t from Porsche (and just b/c it’s in a Porsche box doesn’t mean it’s the best available) just that the individual looking for a 901 shift knob back in Oct. probably wanted an original made in the 60’s… not 2010. That’s pretty clear in the wanted ad. As for the three that were listed two days ago, you're right, a little research goes a long way. We’re a tough but fair group here and it makes sense to know what you’re selling before placing a tag like ‘NOS’ on a part. Part of what makes this board so great is you’ll always find someone willing to help out so if there’s ever a question regarding this or that you’re going to find your answer here.
judette,
thanks for the comment.. if i find one more id be glad to take pictures of all the angles you guys want..It is our intention to get to know what is NOS and OEM and Repops.
thanks
Lemon

Weren't the originals made out of Bakelite and not plastic? I think this is the reason the sun faded ones pick up a brown hue over time. Bakelite is pretty easy to distinguish from most forms of plastic in person.
Here's a 4-speed knob that I believe is original:
The numbers look like the original 5-speed knob I posted here and the rim is the same. Plus it has the very subtle grainy black/brown as opposed to the gloss black on repros (which could be patina).
We're going to get these shift knobs figured out!
