    901/0 transmission help needed

    HI

This transmission would seem to be from first inspection from an early '64 911.

Most things stack up - the 901/0 transmisson code and the 100129 serial number, but what doesn't stack up is the 28/68 build date stamped on the casing. Pics below show all the numbers in detail.

Firstly i was cnvinced someone had restamped the transmission for some reason - as the number stamps don't look to be orignal porsche - but then again i don't know and i'm not an expert.

I thought no more of it then i decided tonight to strip it to see what ratios were in it and what diff etc.

The ratios are AA GA O U Y - this is what the '64 cars came with and some of those ratios are very rare and expensive (ask me how i know........!) So from what i know this was a '64-65 only option? It also has an Open diff and 7:31 R&P

So nw i don't have a clue what it is or why the discrepancy in stamped casing and other numbers - can you help?

I think the AT in front of the serial # indicates it is a factory replacement and re-stamp?? gled

My thoughts also (saw this on DDK earlier). Possibly rebuilt with a late case. The internals need to be examined to determine the origin, and age.

Redrobin, are you anywhere close to Apollo Florida?

The engine matched to transmission 100129 at the factory was #900234. It was last heard of installed in a 1965 car #301066. For sale on ebay couple of years ago by the lister "813_maldondo" or "813_apollo".

If I remember correctly the seller didn't want to sell the engine separate from the car. Any of this any help to you?

    HI Guys

I had considered that the casings might have been changed but didn't want to build my hopes up too much, I'm in Belfast Northern Ireland and did a deal to buy the transmission of Ciaran Woods in Magerafelt in Northern Ireland wh buys and sell porsche parts - I'm going to ask him today how he came by it. I've got three 901 transmissions and a 911 one also and building up two for my race car (FIA- Specification - pic attached). I'll also check both shaft diametres and widths of gears. I won't do anything with the transmission yet other than keep it safe until i decide what to do with it really it should be reunited with the original engine in the original car?

thx to all for you're help so far.

HI - more info. I spoke to the guy i bought the tranny from and he told me he bought it as a job lot from a guy in the south of ireland and it came out of a 911T. that's all he can remember. I took some more pics if that helps? some of them have tolerance markings etc. maybe these might help? If anyone knows where i should look next or measure or??? let me know. Thx

What is it exactly that you are trying to find, the numbers on the end of the pinion shaft are for set-up, and to match the pinion to the ring gear, the numbers on the gears are match numbers, so that you know those two gears were run in together. Same with the number on the input shaft, second gear is part of the shaft, the mate to it should also have those numbers.

Well, I was hoping to see some date codes there to help identify the year of the parts. I guess Robin wants to know if the guts match the serial # or are closer to the casting date of the main case. That is a pretty late AL case; the highest date I have is 33/68 on a 1969 trans. It could be a left-over case used for replacement stock.

HI - yes that's right i want to find out if the internals are '64 as per the serial number and not '68 as per the casing. If they're early I'll sell the tranny rather than break it - it's more valuable to a restorer of a '64 car than it is to me as spares for my other two transmissions. I like most on this forum are not millionaires and the build of my 65 race car will be in excess of $80k - much more than i had budgeted for and i do buy many parts for the car and sell what i don't need to fund the build - simple as that. Where else can i look for date stamps - are there any on the gear sets or shafts?

I checked the dates on the gears - only one dating to '65 - not sure what to make of this. Could it be the original tranny was mostly destroyed and then needed replacement gears as well as a new case - it would have been easier ust o buy a new transmission? I know this gear cluster is unique to the early 64 - 65 cars so again seems strange to rebuild with original gear ratios.
