    Steering Upper Shaft Bearing

    I am ordering more parts and one of the things on my list is the upper shaft bearing on the steering column. The car is 1968 N. I can see the bearing on Pelican but it is $260, and then I noticed this on SM for $37.00: http://www.sierramadrecollection.com..._detail&p=6770

    It is described as being suitable for 65-89. Has anyone experience of these? Will it fit the 68 and how difficult are they to install?

    the description is a bunch of crap! There is no bearing in the column that is suitable for 65 -89.
    The bearing you are looking for is $260.00.
    I'll bet you don't need it, though.
    Please describe your problem and why you think you need that bearing. Those bearings rarely go bad unless they are tampered with.

    Thanks Ed and Jim. The SM one is noted (possibly incorrectly) on a couple of other forums as being a suitable replacement for early cars. However, as you seem to suggest, I may not need it anyway. I have the VDM wood wheel (not sure if you were asking me or Jim that question Ed) and a new spring and on the hub shaft that goes down to the bearing. I have noticed some minor lateral movement at times and suspected the bearing. Any suggestions?

    Is there the collar also with the spring you mention? Sorry I don't have a picture of the part, but I know that it's been shown here, possibly even by Jim.

    Yes Ed there is a collar with the spring. It is quite new as well.

    Then you're ahead of 99% of the people with the same problem, you might actually have a worn bearing!

    Looks that way. I could spin up a new thicker collar in ally to reduce the slack, but the bearing is the go, I suspect. Thanks again

    If you have the spring and the collar and it is installed correctly, you could adjust the column and the wheel to get a more precise fit. You may just be off my a smidge which would give you a bit of play and steering wheel wobble.

    Thanks again Jim. The splines on my wheel hub are pretty sound. Will check overall alignment over the weekend and see what the mind comes up with.
