    Dash trim

I am working on replacing old vinyl on the face of my dash and have found the vinyl is attached to a separate piece of steel and then that is attached to the aluminium trim.
Is this normal? Or is the vinyl normally glued directly to the aluminium? The car is a '73E

If its normal, i seem to be missing the steel bit the vinyl is glued to for the ignition part of the dash. Does anyone have one of these I can buy?

    Cheers

It was the case with my 72E. I acquired some spare bits so I'll take a look, but don't recall a spare ignition section. I suppose they're not 'handed' as you can just flip them over.

    Thanks Mick
I figured I would be able to flip it for RHD. Thanks for looking.

Any other thoughts on this? Has anyone pulling the vinyl trim off their ignition part of the dash?

Not the one you are looking for but just for reference I have also found one of these pieces but I am afraid I don't know for sure what car/year it came off but think it may have been a LHD '69E.

Can't "flip 'em"... the LHD and RHD configurations are slightly asymetric.

Pretty sure it's only the radio plate that has the steel insert. I deleted my radio and replaced the plate with a solid piece cut from aluminium sheet. The ignition piece had vinyl glued directly to the aluminium extrusion.

I've done mine a couple of times. The vinyl is glued to a thin steel plate which is then glued to the aluminum. Be careful removing these as it is very easy to bend them and then they never fit right.

David or Anyone - currently my 73 only has the aluminum trim and I purchased vinyl to glue on to the car. I originally thought it would get glued directly onto the aluminum but after reading some posts - ARE there steel plates that the vinyl gets glued on to and THEN glued onto the aluminium? If so where can we source these steel plates?

    Thanks!!

You need to find 0.75 mm thick steel to be exact. I have seen this steel plate in the glove box door alu trim as well.
