Is this info that would be found in the Red Book?
I posted in your Revisions thread as well as it's a 0R case and appeared to be a lower build number of any of that type on your list.
Hello EKM, thanks for posting and welcome to this great study Dave is making.
The 1968 was an experimental period for Porsche serial numbers, just within the 911 there were 13 categories for body numbers. The type 901/14 engine was used in three of those body types including the US 911 Coupe, US 911L Coupe and the 911L Targa. The engine serial number range has been given as 3280001 thru 3281606. From those numbers it looks like the quantity of engines were 1606 - but there is a caveat that the number of bodies fall into a quantity that totals just 1056 edit - nope - see Allens post below. It may have been that the numbers reserved were the 1606 with a little over a thousand used..edit - nope - see Allens post below (That is just a projected guess on my part).edit - nope - bad guess..
Most of the leg work for putting the engine numbers to bodies was the work of Patrick Paternie (R.I.P.) in his book "Porsche 911, Red Book". I just wish Motorbooks would reprint, the going price of a used book is prohibitive. Used Red Books are $250 and new for over a grand. (The pages are falling out of my copy).
Your engine was 0072, close to the beginning of the years production. A guess (just a guess) would put it into a body about last week of September - first week of October 1967 for a 1968 model year vehicle. I don't know of anyway to break it down as to which model of car it was used - 911 - 911L Coupe - or 911L Targa.edit - nope - see Allens post below

You will never know for sure UNLESS you are very lucky and happen on an (ex-)owner record or a C of A or Kardex. Actually the 328xxxx engine could be found in Four U.S. Models:
11805XXX U.S. "L" 1968 chassis
11830XXX U.S. "Normal"
11855XXX U.S. Targa "L"
11880XXX U.S. Targa Normal
Your engine would be in a VERY early 1968 model which started production in around July 1967
Here are some verified engine numbers near yours for each chassis type:
11805005 with 3280036
11830016 with 3280098
11855005 with 3280216
11880012 with 3280156
Yours is 3280072. Looks like the Targas came a little later and by their manufacture where already a 328100+ numbers. Likely yours was in U.S. Normal or L. There were more Normals so IF I had to make a guess I'd guess your engine was in U.S. "normal" ~11805035 ! BTW and REALLY good thing about your early 328 engine is that it is Aluminium and valued by engine (re)builders; later in the run Porsche transitioned to magnesium. Thanks.

Allen, those verified VIN matches are very useful and interesting. I'm a little confused on a couple details from your post, though.. the models chart you posted lists the '68 US "normal" as 1183xxxx through 1180xxxx. Typo? When guessing my VIN, you guessed US "normal" 11805035. That would be an"L" model, no?
It would be interesting to know when the Targa production started. Based in the verified VIN matches Allen provided it seems likely to be one of the 1st 15th "normals" or an "L" model.
Allen, do you have an expanded list of VIN engine matches or know where I may find one?
I did in fact just purchase the motor from a local member with the intent of building a hot-rod '68.

You're the first to catch a small mistake on my "chart," yes typo..I'm going to fix that and replace the chart. An early "L," yes or as likely an early 1183xxxx normal. "Expanded list?" Maybe someone has one but I've been assembling my data base for several years now and I was able to extract what I posted. I did "surf around" VIN numbers I provided on google and this list and came up with no other matches. However, I bet someone reading this know of of an engine number nearer to yours with a matching VIN. I know a well-known SWB list member has an "L" without its original engine but with a VIN that should have a engine VERY close to yours! Thanks.
