Just got to work after a long, long weekend with the Porsche Owners Club PDS Series at the Streets of Willow. This was the Swan Song event for the POC at the Streets of Willow, as the SOW is not on the schedule for 2014. It was a great track and I learned something every time I drove there; it's going to be a steep learning curve next season with The Big Track, Chuckwalla, and Buttonwillow on the schedule as I haven't driven Big Willow in a few years, never ran Chuckwalla, and have only had a difficult time racing motorcycles at Buttonwillow.
But I digress...
The weekend at The Streets was GREAT ... we raced in the cold rain on Saturday, and it was sunny at 60* yesterday. Saturday was FAST - horsepower weather for sure - but what was surprising was just how much faster everyone was going. Best I could manage in the wet was a 1:30.1 ... and that was before I made a fast exit and flew off the track and ended up going backward into the mud! I definitely dug a few trenches, and a few people said the car lit off a 5ft flame when I was getting it restarted!![]()
Wish I had a photo of that one, because it left a nice burn mark on the bumper above the 4-6 tail pipe.
Sunday was GORGEOUS weather for Willow. Zero wind, sunny skies, and cool temps. Funny thing, though, everyone's times were about 1-2 seconds off Saturday despite the dry track. I actually improved on my Saturday time, but the best I could manage yesterday was a 1:29.8 on a flying lap with no traffic. The suspension made a huge difference in the overall comfort of the laps, but I think my tires were used up from the last few events because no matter what I did I wasn't able to get the car to really hook up like it should. One of my well-respected friends and multiple lap record holder at the Streets took the car out for a few laps and came back with the same conclusion - tires were sh!t.
At about the halfway point of the day it was obvious I wasn't going to be able to hold off my closest competitor for 2nd place in class, which means that he actually locked up 2nd place in the series. It was a long, hard-fought battle between us all season, and he definitely earned the 2nd place finish. And while I'm disappointed with a 3rd overall, I have to say that the experience of doing an entire season of club racing from start to finish was one of the most fun things I've done with my Porsche. I'm also happy to report that a 2.5L 911 street car making 190rwhp and weighing 2400lbs - that was driven to and from every event - was still somewhat relevant at the racetrack.
I'm also happy to report that the car made it through the season virtually unscathed. Yesterday while trying really, REALLY hard I hammered a cone with the RR of the car. I had been crushing cones all season - they kept jumping out in front of me at the apexes - but this one fought back and bent the bumper extension and cracked the paint on the quarter panel. It left it's mark, too, as a warning to the rest of the drivers not to mess with the BIG cones.![]()

Ya know, Chuck, it's funny ... sometimes I come to work and see my '74 911 tucked in with all the early cars and it's, like, one of the newest cars in our building. Then I go out to the racetrack with the POC and I get hit in the face with the fact that I'm competing in what amounts to a freakin' horseless carriage.Just this weekend I had a bunch of people come up and say, "It's great to see an old car out here. You just don't see that anymore..."
And I'm like, "Dude, I didn't know my car was that old!"
It's not that old to me ... in fact, it's the most modern Porsche I've ever had!![]()
