Thread: Flapper box restoration ?

  1. #1

    Flapper box restoration ?

I wonder if I'm calling them the wrong name because it doesn't return much on the search. The orangish heater valves that get a flap rotated by the cabin heater control cable, and should return in place when the lever isn't pulled.

I've got a sticky one on one side, so whenever I or someone servicing my car accidentally grabs the heater lever instead of the start up lever, I get heat all day till I can get under the car and manually move it. It happened once in FL on a 95F day and things got so toasty that I had to turn around and go home ;-) Now that I relocated in a cold state, I could use on-demandl functionality: how easy are those to repair ? Or is it a "replace" situation ? I've sprayed lube at it but nope... it moves with a screwdriver... If anyone's done theirs, can you tell me what's involved to restore smooth operation before I got dig mine out please ? Thanks !
    Greg.

Disconnect the cable, now see if the valve operates easily, if so you have a cable alignment problem, if not you have a sticky valve problem, if sticky valve remove and lube/tweak whatever until its smooth. If cable problem rotate the cable clamp/cable director until the valve operates freely.

They do dis-assemble/assemble, but like Ed says, isolate the problem. If the flapper, try a overnight soak with Kroil or PB Blaster.

Check that the spring isn't broken. The flapper just rotates on plastic bushings pulled by the spring. Restored they could look like this.

Cool, thank you guys... I didn't think it could be the cable, but that makes sense. Nothing special about undoing them other than tight spaces ?

Soak the studs overnight if they have any corrosion on them.
