One more question Karim, you mention that the source of yr picture is the '901 book'. Do you have more info on that book?

Well, the best book about the Porsche 901 and 911 is Aichele "Porsche 911 Forever young". I have it in German.
All infos on prototype, developments of the 901, engine infos and testing, all 13 prototyp infos were provided by Aichele.
He wrote it 20 years ago !
This is were I get many infos from and where I translated some in english for member davep as well as the 901-232 registry.
Aicheles book is the Master Book.
The "Porsche 901" by Lewandowski -the one you ask- is nothing else than a abrevation of Aichele's book, he also copied -with permit- Aichele's prototyp infos list. Its a nice "Coffee Table" book but does not provide any new info, buts its written in english, hence for a larger audience.
It came out only in limited numbers. It does offer a few new pics but most I have seen in Aichele before.

As for the angled tailtip, I read it.
But it basicially confirms that they left the factory in dozens, as seen in post 97 and period factory shots.
This is the factory and shows early production 911, late 64 or early 65. All cars have the angled tailpipe detail.
Brian Long shows another room shot where one can see this are production cars and not prototypes.

BTW, I still think black underneath the front hood was used in (some ?) early prod. 65 cars.

I am sure the black under front hood was used. My unrestored March 1965 912 (450186, IE #186 of the Karmann production) has it as well, although with a little rougher texture than the ones from the Porsche factory.

I have scanned thru my brochures, ads, tests of 1965 as well as the owners manual and Christophorus June (or July?), confirming your (angled) point.
I think in 1964 the cars did not have a chrome tip, but what we see is the end tube of the muffler. It is clearly angled. You see it on all cars pictured as well as drawn, and also on the engine drawings. Although all material I have states that it is issued early or late in the first half of 1965, my impression is that the cars they used were mostly, if not all, 1964. Some of the drawings are even from a more experimental phase.
The story on the wrongly factory mounted tips is maybe a myth (?)
Like with the heat exchangers, we might not find a lot of original material to depict the point of change.
Milou, your bali blue having an angled end, does it have a tip or do we see the muffler tube?
Anybody more info?

Here is one new important early car (378) added for comparison in the 1Q, when most changes took place. More input required people to fill the empty spaces.
One specific remaining question is the '356 type chairs' that allegedly were used till 1045, also referred to by Dr B Johnson. What is the difference? Does it refer to
- the 6 folds (did the 356 have 6 folds at all)?
- the 3 screw reclining hinges (later became 2 screw, but much later than 1045, I think even LWB)?
- the Recaro knobs without logo (versus later with logo)?
I have no clue.

Jacques you are doing a wonderful job, keep it going.
I only have a few items to add.
1964 cars had carpet. Early on a reviewer wrote about the carpet with the "rubber" heal and tunnel wear "mats" sewn in place, which was a real premium feature. On its pick up for a another publication the words were edited to just having "rubber mats", it must have been limited to word count and missed the full impact and meaning.... Full carpets, gas heaters and wood steering wheels were all items in service to the roll out of the new car model. Yes there is rubber floor mats pictured in the early Drivers Manuals as is the carpet, both were planned for, but cars used for the introduction of the "new car" were exampled with the top of the line features. As a easy change out item it is quite possible any car could have it's worn carpet replaced with less expensive rubber in the intervening 50 years.
The ring gas flap release with it's hole thru the "A" pillar was used thru car 300 254. This is identified in the Parts book, Group 8/3, page 5 and 6, "Tank cover Control up to chassis 300 254". 8 items. The knob that is added to the wire in the door jamb, as pictured in the January 1965 Drivers Manual (page 42) was a interim fix, as is installed in car 300 040. It has a metal shaft threaded for the plastic knob and fixed to the release wire. You must open the car door to reach it as it is in the door jamb, while the hole thru the A post and it's rubber grommets are still in place. The smaller gas flap release knob at the left of the dash as pictured on page 24 of the English version of the November 1965 Drivers Manual (W312 e), was used from car 300 255, approximately January 12th 1965 (second week) forward.
Note on the color period photo of the red 901/911 (in the prior above post) the front air grille is black (not silver). On the other B/W period photos it is always a black item, is as page 31, Drivers Manual, in both of it's Jan and Nov 1965 printings. This follows the Light Ivory prototype that is used for the Brochure W221 (August 1963) and the color photos of the yellow car 13 325 which was introduced at Frankfort in 1963. In the specification brochure W 28 (March 1965) all three cars the red, white, and blue car show the grille as black. (If someone can point to a period photo with a silver grille please let me know).
The slanted chrome tail pipe end is featured in a large group of period photos. Item 901 111 151 04 (item 2/1 in the parts book diagram) is a separate weld on tail pipe piece. It appears to have been a well reviewed and changed item, (the last two digits indicate it had four modification by 1966). It's order in the part diagram show it was a early on item, vs the chrome slide over tail pipe (#32) which is the last item in that illustrated section.
Car 300 952 has the six center panel front seats. Change between 952 and Johns car 301100.
Six piece wood dash was standard at the end of 1964, car 232, by car 952 it was simplified to five pieces.
End of 1964 cars did not have a model number on the rear lid or the glove box. (Easy to add by owners/dealers).
April 1965 cars had both rear lid number badge and dash glove box number badge.
Hope this helps.
