Arrow Dilemma : Porsche 901 engine VS 904 4-cam engine

    Dilemn,

Since several years, I owning an early Porsche 901 engine coming from a 901 car.
Recently, I've been offered to make a swap with a four cam engine made by Capricorn.
I don't know if it's already the time to think about it or wait for another opportunity.
    Any advise would be appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Olivier

You proposed this trade a few years ago, didn't you? Is the dilemma real vs. Capricorn or is the dilemma 4 vs. 6?

I suppose you could find yourself a '65 so you would still have a correct-ish "beater" motor, but would have a hard time giving away a "real" '64 for a "reproduction" Fuhrmann. The 4-cam is a lot of hassle and expense to keep running, so you must be very sure...

do it if you like to look at a 4 cam or can use it for a replica 904. There are more very early 901 engines / cases out there than 4 cams.

    Just my $.02

To meet Stevie's remarks and just for an example, it takes an experienced mechanic nearly 100 hours to assemble it.
Despite 904s were orinaly designed to be used with a flat-6 engine, the factory decided to increase the power of the previous 4 cam engine typ 587 to a nearly 200HP.
More complex but more reliable than the very early 911 engines.
For the little story, I owned once a 4 cam engine (P97317) coming from a Porsche 356 C2 Cabriolet. As I bought it as is (disassembled), I was puzzled and fascinated about this technology which was born just after the WWII...

Finally, I'm thinking about keeping this engine. Maybe more because it comes from a 901 car than a 911.

Olivier- Why are you considering this? Financial? Performance? What are your objectives in making this decision?

    Hi Haasman,

Performance is not the question; as being a collector of rare parts, I'm more interested in making exchanges than getting money.
What would be your opinion about this ?

    Hi Olivier,

Just to clarify, because I think I misunderstood: Is the 904 engine a genuine Porsche one rebuilt by Capricorn or is it one of Capricorn scratch built new engines? I was under the (maybe false) assumption that you were talking about a Capricorn continuation engine...

    I would not trade a real '64 901 for a "new" 4-cam. A real "old" 4-cam is worth considering...
